Touch-Up Paint Tips?
A certain someone (!!!!) loaded the suitcases in the hatch and scratched the bumper paint. I'm so upset!
I bought touch-up paint today and over the weekend, plan to try to fix the damage, as best I can. Any tips or advice? (Besides buy the cargo mat that unfolds to cover the bumper.....) |

Simple.
Use Dr.ColorChip! The product is amazing. Paint color is an exact match, and it fills in the chips/scratches. I have used their product for a few years now on various cars- great stuff. With deeper chips/scratches, you may have to 'build up' the product by reapplying it more than once. It leaves a smooth result every time. Vids on how the stuff works: http://drcolorchip.com/videos.php |

Not a bad idea to try it. Does the scratch extend over the edge of any panel?

Those are the most fun. I think something like the Dr colorchip would be your best bet.

Tell me about it.
Still haven't attempted a touch-up. Unfortunately, I had already bought BMW paint before learning about Dr. Color Chip, which sounds/looks remarkable. Is there any special technique with standard BMW touch-up paint? I read something about using a match for application?? |

I agree. You have no way of leveling the factory touch up paint. Wet sanding factory touchup paint is enough of a PITA on a flat surface. Dont even think about it on an edge.

Here's another source for quality paint touch up products. I've used them for years and the match is incredible, even on colors that were not matched by the dealer "pens" . I have never used the Dr. brand which could well be superior. This is simply another possibility, as they sell small pens and larger bottles, spray cans, etc all custom blended for your color car. http://www.paintscratch.com/ I was amazed when the 2008 328i Arctic Matallic matched so well that the scratches perfectly disappeared. That color is one that changes from a green to a blue to a silver depending on the angle and light.
I had a custom repair done on a front bumper and it took about 40 mixes with a computer to get the color right as I watched; these guys do it by mail! Computers are amazing in that business. Good luck with the touch ups! (Incidentally, Foam tip touch up applicators are available at Griot's Garage online that are much smaller than the pen tips and they are also available in small and medium sizes. You can also use toothpicks and split them for very fine lines, thin the paints with the proper thinner if needed. A BIG TIP..DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL on your paint to clean it. It will ruin the paint. It is not compatible with the water based acrylic lacquers or enamels and will soften them and ripple them. The lacquer thinner used with factory paints, while it is much more volatile, is what was recommended for cleaning my paint and worked fine. Just follow the instructions!)
