Abs and Traction Control Light : ON/OFF

Hello everybody, well heres my story. Im driving home from work going 75MPH when all of a sudden out of nowhere my ABS and traction light came on. I was coasting, no bumps or anything on the highway so i pressed my brakes and they felt fine .nothing felt different in the way the car rides. The distance to work is 18 miles. So i drove to work the rest of the weekend(fri-sun) and on sunday night on the highway on my way back home they disappeared.not necessarily sure if thats a good thing. Perhaps a sensor is malfunctionin?(upgraded my wheels to 19"miros 2 weeks ago)any input or help will be appreciated!

Mine has been doing that from time to time. The first time it happened the speedo/cruise control stopped working. I pulled the wheels and cleaned the sensors. Since then very random and speedo always works. My guess is my front sensor is getting tired and it won't be long for the rear.

Makes alot of sense! Thanks for the reply, i was so close to just replacing everything abs related until the light went away. Ima clean the wheels today, there must be crud built up messing with my sensors. For now ima enjoy the abs/trac light being off and saving $$$ thise modules get pricey!

While you have them off pull out the sensors and clean them and their housing as best you can. If you have "asc" you have one on the left rear and one at right front. If you have "dsc" you have one at at for wheels. At least this is from what I recall.

Speedo is left rear for either I believe. That helps you can troubleshoot which sensor is bad.

NOTE, the following applies to 97-98 e39 only.

If abs light, traction light is on, AND you have no cruise control, and your speedometer doesn't work, then inspect the sensor at the rear, left side.

If abs light and traction light is ON, BUT you have cruise control functioning and your speedometer works fine, then look at the sensor at the front left side.

This may be the cause of the problems my car is experiencing. From time to time the traction control cuts out and my cruise control hasn't been working for some time. I haven't had any problems with my speedo though. I've also had my check engine light go on and off randomly. Could these sensors be my problem?

I'm far from an expert on the subject. There are a million threads on it. But I think it's worth cleaning them and seeing if there is a difference. Look carefully at the wires as well. They may be your culprit. I'm all about trying free solutions prior to throwing money at problems.

honestly it will cost you almost the same to get the codes read as to guessing which speed sensor it is. there are 20 different problems that could cause the abs light to come on and off. you need to get the codes read by a proper scan tool. doesn't mean you have to have them perform the work but you know what to replace yourself. guessing can get expensive. best of luck. if you get the code read we can give you more info on where to find the part the cheapest and the easiest way to DIY. everyone on this forum can give you their opinion but none of us will truly know. it's just like guessing a check engine light
