Lightweight? how light is light?

Hey everyone,

I am curiouse as to how many people have dramaticly lightend the e36 ( perferably m3 sedan ) and what the end weight was. My car is said to weigh in at 3175lbs I would like to see somewhere around 2800 on the scale and wondered if anyone has gotten near this range and what you did to get there.

I am willing and capable of doing some of my own fab work so nothing is to much I am just intrested in what people have done and what was the end resault and how far you have to go to get good loss.

The M3 Lightweight came in 200 - 300 under the stock M3.

To get there - Thinner underbody insulation, no underhood blankt, only a carpet on the trunk floor, no tool kit, no AC, no radio, no sunroof, aluminum door skins, no leather. I haver heard, but not confirmed, that the window glass is thinner.

Yea I have read up a little on the lightweight m3. I have done some basic fomulas and have found just over 200lbs that could be saved without sacrificing most of the amenities. 3175-206=2969lbs.
I know that there is lightweight capets and if I took the rear speakers out and put a piece of aluminum in place of the sunroof hardware I could drop an additional 70lbs or so.

I would love to go lexin on the windows however I don't have the knowhow and from prices I've seen (400+ per) I probably can't fit it into budget so that wieght is gonna have to stay for now.

Has anyone gone this far? It seems like little work to have such huge savings and really not all that expensive.

Almost everything on this list are products I have been able to find actual weights on (sunroof 45-50lbs) so Im close on total loss give ot take a couple lbs.

that is 16hp per ton a good gain. or the same as adding about 25hp
