Once it reaches the red your car will spontaneously combust, BMW has been trying to fix this issue ever since the E38 debuted. Good luck

When your car lights on fire just get out and start putting out the flames with a jerry can full of kerosine, it'll stop the fire

If you haven't figured yet, I'm kidding. It's the oil service interval. Once it gets to the yellow you should change your oil and filter and do some basic maintenance for the mileage its at.

You can download an owners manual in PDF format directly to your computer...you can find a manual at the bottom of the left column at www.e38.org . If your model year is NOT listed...then download the manual that is CLOSEST to your model year...you won't miss a thing since the 750iL has every option/feature available years before the V8 and I6 e38 models...so all features are listed in prior or previous manuals to your model year.

I'm oddly puzzled that you don't know what the Service Interval display is since you owned a 2000 328i...it should have had a SI display...it may have looked slightly different but the design is still basically the same.

Here's the description from the e38 owners manual:

And here's a more detailed description of how the Service Interval System works...again, the SI display may be designed slightly different depending on model or cluster type (low or high)...but the overall design architecture works the same way...5 green LEDs, 1 yellow LED, 1 red LED, an OIL SERVICE warning light, and an INSPECTION warning light:
