F30 328i vs 2013 Accord, found the new Accord more fun to drive

I have an old beloved E46 (328i base) that's showing its age ($$$) and am thinking of getting a new daily beater. Recent lurker as I'm contemplating my next purchase. I drive my cars to the ground instead of trading every couple of years, and view them as appliances that I like to have some fun with. Test drove a 2012 328i sports line yesterday, and feel quite a bit underwhelmed. Where's that peppy spunk that I loved in the E46? Today I also test drove some Hondas and Acuras, honestly the new 2013 Accord Sport with paddle shifters AND A FREAKING CVT drove better and was more fun than the I4 2.0 F30 IMO. The CVT on the Accord matched really well with the VTEC engine, more responsive than the V6 autos on the Acuras and the 328i steptronic 8spd. The F30 was actually faster than the Accord but it didn't feel faster and the handling felt a lot more synthetic than the E46. Don't get me wrong, the F30 is a very comfortable and nice car, it just felt less like a BMW should and used to feel, you know? How do I get my E46 back? That was a fun, (mostly) care free, and unpretentious car.

Craigslist. Depending on where you live, at any time there are 50-100 for sale ranging from $4,000-$8,000. Go buy 8 of them, every color made in 2004, and enjoy yourself.

Good luck.

It sounds like the accord is the right fit for you. There isn't a one size fits all car out there.

What makes this particularly funny is that all these E46 people whining about BMW not making an E46 have hundreds of cars to choose from at dirt-cheap prices.

There's more E46 inventory than F30 inventory where I live. I may buy one of these myself, might come in handy to bribe my cleaning girl to let me see her naked.

This ain't the Altima or Prius CVT.

Or it just might be from shock that the CVT didn't totally suck as I had expected. It also might just be I'm so used to driving my old car that I'm not used to luxury.

Will probably try out the 335i this weekend and see if it's better.

This turns out to be wrong. There was a 328i, according to Wikipedia, 1998-2000.

There was, in the first year (or maybe 2)...323 and 328. The engine in 328 was the carry over from the E36. They subsequently released a new one which became the 330, and tuned the engine in 323 to produce more horses (but lower torque) and called it the 325.

Get what makes you happy.
Is the Accord Sport fun, (mostly) care free, and unpretentious car?
Do you want to be seen in a Honda or BMW?
If I had a do over in first car buying, I would have saved for a BMW.

Don't get me wrong here, because I'm going to cave in and get an F30 (I like most of it and think it's the best car out there)...but if you found me a brand new E46 base car built now, I would buy that even if it cost as much as the base F30. I just know I'll save tons on tires and broken gadgets, while enjoying every minute of it. I very much doubt I'd be able to keep an F30 to 200K, but I probably shouldn't underestimate the creativity of BMW designers in getting me to do that.

i too test drove my colleagues new accord I4 CVT combo. It was definitely better than last year accords transmission but I wont say its better than my 335d's ZF transmission. And I suppose ZF 8 speed should be better in F30. I personally didnt drive new F30 but based on reviews and some chats with F30 owners I think you need to get variable steering and adaptive M suspension if you want some good BMW feel.

That's like when you visit the expensive private college and the in-state public college and your kid loves the in-statepublic college much more.

One word: whew.

But for me, I can't drive a car with a CVT. I have had them as rentals and it always feels like I hit the shift lever with my knee or something.

I test drove the 03 Accord as well, its quite a car. Fit and finish is very good and its as quiet as the F30 on the highway. The LED headlights are cool, but I think the bi-xenon on my BMW is still brighter. Love the passenger side blind spot camera and all the other safety features. All that toy for under $30K is hard to beat. The 4 cyl engine does lack highway passing power as expected, but its very responsive in the city. I do agree about the CVT, its one of sportier one I have driven. Does anybody know if the Honda CVT is a belt and pulley type?
My next stop is the Ford dealer, the new Fusion looks very nice as well.

I haven't driven either of the new cars mentioned, but I'd not be surprised at all if the new Accord sport out-handled a new F30, especially the "luxury boat" edition ...
