Nav System Repair or Upgrade-aftermarket

Hello Group,
I came into possession of a 2003 BMW Z4 2.5L about a month ago. After making the decision to keep it and make it my DD, I started to familiarize myself with the vehicle. First of all, I love the little car, it is very peppy, quick and nimble in traffic. A few more horses would be fine, but for now I am comfortable as my DD. My question is related to the Nav system. When I received the car none of the Nav system or bluetooth worked. The only thing that worked was the screen popping up. The radio works fine and so does the CD player. The car is a 2003, 13 years old. with a 13 year old Nav system. Would the group agree that it would be better and more cost effective to purchase a new aftermarket system in lieu of fixing and upgrading the unit it was born with?? Your advice and suggestions are much appreciated.

Finding a reliable source for the Nav System map update is very challenging for older models, and even if you get it to load successfully, the Nav Data still has a lot of inaccuracies compared to what you'd get if you just bought a Garmin or Magellan. Just my $.02 worth.

Does anything display initially before going black? In the compartment between the seats, is the red nav CD light on? Is there a maps CD in there?

I was able to find the firmware for free on the Internet and I bought 2015 maps off of eBay for $20. Everything works fine but I did have a functional nav before updates.

Thanks for the responses, I found a "how to" on youtube and tracked down the author of that youtube submission. Fortunately, he is located 10 min from my house. I took my car to him and he was able to turn on the Nav, and the screen also turned on with the radio and CD display. I am very excited to see it and he didn't charge me. He seems to agree that my system is too old and it might be better to upgrade to an after market Nav and Bluetooth system. Thanks to you'all for the suggestions and advice.
