I have a question for you guys running headers

What mufflers leave the car pretty quiet at idle but let it scream in the upper range after doing headers? Borla? magna? Thanks guys.

Ths "sound" generated from any given muffler is usually a very "personal interpertation" kind of deal.....either you like it, or you don`t. From what I`ve observed, Magnaflows will be more agressive throughout the RPM range as opposed to Borlas, which also have a nice quality sound, but not quite as rowdy as the magnas.
My first BMW had a built engine with high compression pistons, hot cam, headers, no cats, and a SuperSprint Free Flow exhaust, which had hardly any baffling in it....that sucker was *loud*, my wife said when the windows were open, she could hear me coming from 2 blocks away (but, it was loud in a *good* way, with all that compression, and a "rummmp-rummp" hotrod idle, it sounded quite bad-ass....)

P.S.: Of course, memories are usually rose-colored....I was also 30 years younger in those days, and I might have a slightly different opinion of that sound now...

Yea I just wanted to go with something that wouldn't be too loud when I am driving down the Free way. My VR4 sounded badass from a stop but while cruising I would rather listen to a Taylor Swift song than that obnoxious exhaust note.

Look up sound clips from youtube, or even ask other drivers around. Good muffler shops also have some one that help you with the sound you're aiming for

Another benefit is, I think every component of the Borla system is stainless steel, so it should last a long time.

Oh I will not be buying and full exhaust, Me and 5 other guys built that damn car in my sig from noting but aluminum steel rods and a big ass roll of carbon fiber. This will be a custom Thiessen racing exhaust but It will have stainless piping. I have said too much I will have pics and vids when this endeavor is done... Which will have to wait for a bit

Contact billy boat, they make exhausts for almost every car, and the coolest thing is when you order one they build it at that time so if you want louder or softer they can help you with that. I had mine with added extra set of resonators to get q nice "solid deep tone" m roadsters can get raspy with certain set ups

Yea I plan on it. I am just nervous that I am going to get the headers on put in my exhaust and it will be loud as hell.. Then I will have to restart.

Can`t recall the name of the company right now (Supertrapp, maybe ?), I think they started with motorcycle pipes and expanded to cars as well. Their mufflers had a user-adjustable design where you could add or subtract baffles to fine-tune the sound to your liking. Something like that might be right up your alley....

Your memory serves you correctly, Bob! SuperTrap is the one, and you add or remove discs to adjust flow and sound. VERY bit with the 4-stroke off-road crowd in the 80's and 90's, then the vintage car racing market, I believe.

This muffler is pretty neat actually. I have driven his car a few times and it is surprisingly tame at idle and lower RPM's but absolutely SCREAMS above 4k.

EDIT: It looks and sounds like hammered dog turds due to the file compression required for an MMS message. Enjoy anyway. Maybe smolck will be nice enough to upload the HQ version... *HINT, HINT* (Please?)

I can't blame you there. Whoever owned my car previously must have been made of money.

too bad they didn't fix that terrible oil consumption problem you have! Most people who are "made of money" don't buy an E46.

It's all good. He was probably one of those "mods before maintenance" people.
