The entire reason they did the recall is that testing showed that in the lowest position the headrest whiplash prevention was not working properly. I'm not sure exactly why someone would go to the length of disassembling their car to override a safety feature.

I'm not trying to override the safety feature. Right now the head rest in the full down position with the 2 notches showing, the bottom of the head rest is even with the top of my head. If I could move the head rest to be flush with the seat back the head rest would be in the center of my head where IMO it should be to get maximum safety Now maybe you can understand why I want to move it. Besides you will get better vision looking out the rear window passenger side when siting in the drivers seat.
cheers

Thanks for explaining Vern. I mistakingly thought that it was the lowest position that caused the problem, but it is the highest position that has the issue.

Does anyone know if they have continued doing this hose clamp fix from the factory or did the engineers come up with something more elegant on the newer build cars?

If you go on BMWNA site and build your car you will see it looks much better with the head rest flush with the back rest.IMHO

Just removed my headrest on a 2013 328i with sport seats (M-sport - leatherette). The clamp is gone. It is replaced with a torx (T30 I believe) screw in the bottom of the left post (drivers side seat) - the post with the release/adjust button. I had to do the mod on the other post to lower the headrest flush to get access to the torx screw.

FYI I had a hell of a time getting the seat back clips out - I used a set of pliers and ended up breaking them both.

Good luck

I just bought a 2012 335i and the recall wasn't taken care of (its been on the lot for 10 months)(Tim Bush BMW Richland, WA) So I take it in tomorrow. Their excuse for not doing it, "well we don't pay a lot of attention to these, that are on the lot". Counting all the things that have "turned up" as a result of my purchase, this might turn out to be the biggest mistake that I have made in a long time.

I think I found the post your talking about.

http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11916802

Looks like you need to repeat the process every time the rest gets adjusted up and you want it to go back down again..

Thats one of many posts on the head rest. You will have to repeat the fix every time you adjust the head rest unless you remove those two little springs on the part that you push in to enable the head rest to go down. I didn't do that because I don't move them any more once there in the down position. Good luck
cheers

I needed to remove the headrest for a separate reason - therefore, I needed to remove the screw (clamp in older versions) to pull the head rest. I was updating the process for removing the headrest - not for lowering the headrest.
