NeedeD a call sign for online fighter simulation. All the cool ones were taken so as I used to fence I picked saber for its lightning quick pace and walk is part o fly last name. Totally embarrassing to think of it now, but it is kind of unique so I don't have to sign in as saberwalk187.

I used to work as a paramedic, which literally means, "beside the doctor." I finally got into medical school, and created my username. I've kept it ever since...

That is correct and Anthony Edwards ("Goose") bought the farm in the accident which caused Tom Cruise ("Maverick") to almost quit.

The first forum I joined in 01 I didn't understand what the user name was going to be used for, so I used my first initial and last name - which it still is on that forum. But I realized I didn't really care to use my name, so from then on I became jjsC5 at first, then jjsC6 on all the car and motorcycle forums I'm on (I'm a junkie).

The first three are my initials, C5 and C6 are generations of Corvettes. I had two C5s (01 and 03) and I have owned four C6 Corvettes (05, 05, 08 and 09). It makes is easier to remember my user name by using the same for most of them.

Art because it's my name, and 234 was my badge number when I served as a firefighter and fire medic.

Great thread! Back in the dim mists of the dawn of digital communication, our firm's local network required an 8-letter login based on the first seven letters of our last name, and the first letter of our first name. Was too lazy to change it when I ventured out onto the Internet. A couple of years ago, I started getting paranoid about casually putting personal info out there.

Since I'm a ham radio operator, I decided to select a user name based on my favorite form of communication. My sportsman friends say it's sort of like hunting with a bow and arrow.

I got the name from when I was stationed in Germany back in 96. It's pretty obvious if you ever lived there. The saying always goes that it's the biggest city in Germany. People that dont know often mistake it as Ass Fart. Ok, I was one of them when I moved there. Ausfahrt (Exit).

LOL.

My father in law, who is the worlds biggest perpetrator of puns, and also was stationed in Germany for the Army, tells me every time we leave his house to have a "Good Fart".

LOL.

So Imothph......

My very first email account was inherited from my mother, and you can imagine how creative THAT was. It was run by a tiny back-woods provider and this is back when 56K dial-up was still hot stuff and if you had DSL, you were an Internet Demi-God.

I bought my first computer at the same time I inherited the email account and being totally naive, I tried to sign up my new account and on forums (such as they were) with my name.......yea...good luck. What...there's more than 1 Allan on the internet?...ABSURD!

Suddenly I found myself in basically instant need of a user name (had the email service on the line waiting). I glanced around frantically and spotted a book I had on Egyptian lore, I grabbed the first name that wasn't completely obvious......you guessed it....Imothph.

Now, this wasn't the cool name I had envisioned, but it ended up with an unexpected twist - even as online chat got more popular, most people were still on dial-up. Many people thought that my user name was totally cool and impressively smart....because they read it as .... IM On the Phone...Imothph!...which with dial-up, you were.

So rather than dump it for being uncool, I kept it and after a while I started gaining a reputation on boards and such with that username, so It made sense to keep it. It also has the distinct advantage of being very unique - number of times I've had to change it to register someplace....Zero.

Every once in a while I'll register with my email name, but typically I go with Imothph.

FUN FACT: People have no idea how to pronounce "Imothph" , its often a source of comment. I'd love to help them of course, but I've no idea either - its what you get when you pull names randomly from books.

Good old AOL days. Like many of us I had to think up a username.

Im = I'm
SW = My initials
1 = I'm the first SW in my family.

So simple.
