BMW 1 series steering jammed

HI,

Had my 1 series 118 diesel for 2.5 years now without a fault. However, parked up at a petrol station and filled up. Tried to start it and the steering lock would not release (quite embarrassing to say the least). The car was towed away to a BMW dealer - really disappointed, just hope that the electronic steering lock does not engage when I am traveling on the motorway - lost any faith I have in BMW build quality and will be trading in. Must say the customer service and replacement vehicle was a god send (good job still under warranty!!!!!!!!!!)

C-5 Corvettes had a recall for the same issue. The dealers basically disconnect the locking mechanism. My theory is people jump in the car and immediately start it. I and others have found if you turn the ignition on and also the systems to activate before starting there are any issues.Hope this helps.

That has to be the most stupid reason for getting rid of a car I have ever heard. 1 fault in 2.5 years! That's better than most people can say. If you wanted a reliable car, you should have gone with Honda or Toyota.
