Is it possible to install the inbuilt BMW navigation system
Recently I bought 2009 528i that came with premium package. Although the car does not Navigation it does have option on the idrive . So my question if I want to install navigation what are the things I need to buy to make it happen? Cost?
Thanks Joe |

You are looking at thousands of dollars in parts and labor. Not really worth the money and effort. There are many threads on this board about people who want to add Nav to their E60. You can do a search. I don't understand when you say you have the option for it on the Idrive. The car should only say "Car Data" where the Navigation option should be. What does yours say?

I don't believe the above post is accurate at all. You can get the CCC navigation system for under $1000. Install it, code it, call it a day. I've done a lot of reading on this because I have a non-nav car and I bought it only because I had plans on upgrading to the newer CIC system. Even that system can be had for around $1500 now.

My car has the Nav. It's not worth it. I would save your money. Just my opinion.

I can only give the other view. The integrated feature of how the navigation operates is worth a reasonable cost. Not spending an additional 3K. It might not be a perfect system but my 2010 535 Nav works great.

$1000? C'mon man. Not going to happen. New screen, new interface, nav computer, DVD player, new center console faceplate, GPS antenna, wiring harness, patch into CANBUS harness and coding? For a grand? Negative, even for a DIYer. For $2000 it could be done, but it would be an unbelievable pain in the a**. |

It's been done many times... check out threads on 5series.net
As mentioned above, $1000 is pretty optimistic and would realistically only be possible with used parts. These days, the big mod is to install the CiC based navigation with all of the fancy new features. |

if you have the option in idrive then you should have it. unless they changed in 2009. do you have a second cd slot below the audio cd slot?
if you dont have it i wouldnt worry about it. it wouldnt be worth the cost for the little benefit it provides. you have to buy new discs every couple of years and it is kind of a pain to put addreses in. its much faster and more accurate to use your phone, provided you have a smartphone.
