That old 12-tooth gear was basically a little clump of wax. These are such an improvement.

Story of my life. I saw this thread a while back but put off taking the cluster out (again) until today. Got it out and indeed there is clear evidence of gear failure, the only thing I can see is bad enough, the little pinion gear is broke in two. So I put it back in so as to have use of what does work until I get the parts, only to realize upon further reading that I may need to take it out again to determine if it's Moto or VDO.

Good news is, I took a photo, and that combined with the VDO imprinted on the face leads me to think it is indeed VDO. My car is an '87 E30 and I too yearn for a working odo once again. It's late, tomorrow I'll see if I can determine how to order a set.

Look for sticker on the back of the gauge saying the type.

Yeah, I did that - a $120 re-man, not sure what was re-manned, but I got it cheap, or on a work trade anyway - carpentry for my parts guy who has been good to me, but in short order the odo stopped - I finally took it apart and sure enough, the pinion was in two pieces, only one of which I could see.
