2003 X5 door lock motor broken?

Hey guys,

I have a 2003 x5 and the driver's side door will not lock or unlock wirelessly with the key. I have to manually stick the key into the keyhole to lock/unlock it. My key can wirelessly unlock all the other doors, just not the driver's door. I had heard that the locking motor might be broken.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Kevin

The rule of thumbs:
1) door can't be opened from outside when it's already unlock, carrier busted (part #15)
2) door operating rod (part #4) can't go up-down consistently with remote or central locking, but door can be opened from outside once it's unlocked, door actuator busted (part #1).
In either case door can be opened from inside.

From what you are saying, it sounds like my actuator is broken.

Diagnostics:
1. I am able to unlock all doors from the inside (manual. 2 pulls on the handle). Inside lock/unlock button can unlock the other 3 doors.
2. Key can remotely lock/unlock all doors EXCEPT driver's side door.
3. Driver's side door cannot be locked/unlocked using key or inside lock/unlock door button.

I'd call a auto-shop specializing in BMW for a quote, they know to the T how much labor to do it. For dealer add 25-30% over indy price.
It takes me about 3-hr total to do the driver's side.

What's a ballpark estimate for parts and labor?

ballpark,
for indy: I'd say 3hr x $110 + $200 for actuator or $100 for carrier (whicever you think busted). Dealer will be more for both labor rate and parts

for list of independent BMW shops:
http://www.bimmershops.com/

these shops are not mom-n-pop, this shop tends to know the ins-outs of BMW cars and their weaknesses.
Call several of these indy shops and get quotes over the phone.

Good luck.

2. From inside the car using the lock/unlock button on the center consol

3. Manual operation of lifting and lowering the button in each door.
