I before E except...

When you're trying to write using the iDrive controller.

I drove a 535d today. Very smooth, quiet, comfortable and powerful.

But when the SA tried to show me how you can enter destinations using your finger via the controller...a total disaster (for both of us).

The letter "e" was repeatedly recognized as "9."

He said, "You just have to get used to how to use it."

Uh...no, I don't.

In the Audi A6TDI I drove, it worked perfectly...every time.

I know that no car is perfect, but if you're going to put a product out there and promote it as a feature...come on...it's ridiculous.

Was I doing something wrong? If so, both the SA and I were.

Sorry...I gave it an "F."

Richard

Haha, it is like me with the MB Command. I really don't like that wheel mouse thing, trying to navigate.

It's not very good, I agree. I went back to using the rotary input after trying to use it with incosistent results. It likes uppercase letters better than lower, but Es still come out as F's too often. Nice idea, but poor implementation. Software updates are likely.

I'm quite used to iDrive at this point, and it's failings (poor iphone integration, slow number and letter input, etc). Overall, it's actually a very good interface, and quite intuitive, once you are used to how it's organized. Bluetooth works well, you can send addresses from your computer or phone through google maps, and I think the MP3 interface is quite good. Split screen is very nice as well, allowing you to display multiple screens at once (navigation and trip computer information, for instance.)

Ultimately, an iphone puts any car to shame with its ease of use and extreme functionality. I really wish Apple would contract with BMW to optimize the iDrive interface.

Earlier this year my wife yet again took a look at Audi. She opened a trunk on an A4 and plastic piece surrounding the locking mechanism fell off. It's hilarious how some of these cars go out.

I Before E

Sorry...I know how to write...tried it by printing letters, cursive (which is what I did after a while)...so did the SA.

I assume you were joking, and if so, it was clever and was appreciated as such.

Thanks.

Richard

I the brief chance I've had to try it, I seem to have done ok entering the E as more of a blocky-looking 'C' with a cross bar. I'm not certain that it is really all that great. So far, my best results have been with the voice input.

Yeah, I've tried the new iDrive and MMI. Audi has the upper-hand here. iDrive is still fantastic though

Mercedes needs to get their **** together with the COMMAND. It just feels archaic.

Concur. The rest of the rig is great, but the MB COMAND on my wife's GLK BlueTec makes me want to punch kittens.

I'm glad I dot my D without navi.
