Low tire pressure + extreme cold conditions
Greetings from ****ty cold Anchorage, Alaska!
So I was driving around a little while ago and I got the low tire pressure warning go off. It gave me the typical spiel on slowing down to a stop and checking my flat tire. The thing is that my tires all seems properly inflated and am wondering if the cold could be screwing with the pressure? I tried pulling over to put some air in the tire but 1) we use carbon dioxide here and it isn't like traditional air pumps 2) it was -4 out. Thanks! |

It's very likely the temps. If you set your pressures at 50°F by 0°F you will be down by 8psi. Which is enough to trigger the TPM warning. Nitrogen is better when it comes to pressure dropping but I am not sure how much better.
If you checked all 4 tires and they are OK then I would just re-initialize the tire pressures in iDrive: iMenu > Vehicle Settings > FTM > start the car and drive around for 5 to 10 min before the next step becomes available > Set Tire Pressure > Yes > you will see an "Initializing" message Details are in the owner's manual. (page 88-89 in my manual for an '06 650i)

You might have a cracked wheel, if you still have the OEM Ellipsoids. Does one tire seem to loose pressure when it starts getting colder during winter? If so, that might be a cracked wheel, or just old winter cold!

Thanks for the replies.
This is my first time in REAL winter since I bought her last year. HerbP I'm not sure I can answer because it's the first time I got that message. I do mean to buy some tires, notably snow tires, but it has yet to really snow. This is weird for Alaska. Sent from my MB855 using Bimmer App |

I hope you park her indoores...
I use to live in North Dakota. Gets dam cold there (I remember one time there where the high did not get above zero for over a month)... and if Alaska is anytrhing like ND... Its easy to break a seal on a tire (tire & rim) and get a flat. You might want to consider a block heater, battery blanket to keep the car healthy...
