118i EXCESSIVE FUEL CONSUMPTION.

Hi all, i have a 58 plate 118i (petrol) which had a fault when first purchased from new where it kept cutting out and engine management light kept coming on . It was taken in a few times and we were told it had been done, over the past 2 years we have noticed excessive fuel consumption, only getting an average of 31MPG on a run, even less around town, unfortunately it is out of warranty. We had a 318i petrol previously which was averaging 39mpg, which we loved but bought the 1 series as were told it had better fuel economy, we are really dissapointed, has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong.

I'd kill for 31 MPG. My brand new 128i gets 22-24 MPG on the highway.

Hi thank you for your reply, but your talking about a totally different engine, when we bought it it was supposed to be a revolutionary new engine with superior fuel economy, but our 54 plate 318i was far better, and this problem only started after BMW took it in to sort engine management problem. They will be getting back in september.

UK gallons are larger. 31-mpg Imperial is about 26 mpg-US.

thank you very for your thread, it shows how bad the fuel usage is on our model, we shall have to get it looked at Book states it should be in the region of 44mpg so we are well out xx
