I need help please 330ci crank but wont start

Hello guy I'm new here and I dire in need of help. I got a 2004 330ci and this is the only time it happened to me. After driving back from San Diego to Lemoore Ca. I park my car on base. The next day when I started it started sluggish where it starts then slowly dies down, after I start it again and kinda rev the engine thinking it my stay on it did. Then the afternoon I tried to start it, wont start but it cranks. I checked all possible faults, like fuel smell coming out of the exhaust, burnt fuse and I also change the battery and still crank but wont start. To make it worst is the red battery light was on, but now hoping its not something crazy that I have to change, but if I have to then let me know. I need some advices from everybody on what to do next, the fuel pump runs good by the way. Please help me or show me to the right direction on solving this problem.

there smarter people than me on here... but here's a start based on symptoms:

- fuel filter could be clogged

- fuel pump (I know you said it works, but sometimes it will make a sound but still be bad)

- sucking jet transfer pump (if less than 1/2 tank add some fuel and see is that works
)
do a search on these for more troubleshooting details

like I said, there are smarter folks on here, but it's a decent chance it's one of these

didn't quite get the battery light description. did you you kill your battery trying to start it AND NOW after putting a new battery in you're getting a red battery light???

I need help on where to find the fuel filter? But the pump I can hear it working so I put that out. I got a bit over 1/4 right now coz i cant move the car due to it wont start. And about the transfer pump where can I find that in my car?

@smolk I based it on all the forums that I check all over the net, and also I been reading a couple of you post here and hoping you can help me out on my problem. As you can see that i tried almost everything but I want to get your opinion on my problem to my car. The pump well I kinda base it to a couple of the forums info, like is you hear it buzzing or whinning that means it works. But what do you think, I want to get your opinion or should I say your help. But also the starter is working since its cranking do you think? Well please I need your help and also please ask around too. Thank you in advance.

Go get some 5 gallon gas cans and put some gas in it....the transfer pump is on the driver side, fuel pump is on the passenger side- both under back seat. DO a search as there is a lot of info on it. As stated above, if it is the transfer pump it will start when you get above half a tank full.

Battery light means there is something wrong with your alternator...but if it cranks it should start. Get a voltmeter and check volatge...battery should be at 12.4 to 12.6 volts static, at least 13.6 volts after you get is started

@QAfred: Would there a way to check the voltage using the test on the dashboard? Or I really need a voltmeter, I just put in a new battery. But I will try to put more gas in it and wish that works. But still I'll try to keep researching if that works. But thanks for the help, I will let you know if that works. But also would the spark plugs may cause it?

Your battery light will be on until you get it started....once started, if it does not go out, get a voltmeter and check for 13.6 volts at the battery...your dash will not be accurate enough.

Spark plugs would not cause a car not to start...they last forever on our cars...NGK's are the way to go IMO...but not your issue.

Fuel filter is under the car, right under Dirvers seat....you need to buy a Bentley's Manual for this simple info.

BTW...are you in the Navy? Thanks for serving...I did a 4 year hitch in a submarine patrol squadron...VP-6 out of Barbers Point Hawaii...tough duty ...LOL

If you are hearing the pump prime that is a good sign. So you removed the back seat and checked that way?

@QAfred Cool I'm on my 13 years and almost done because high year tenure unless I make it to the next rank, and thank you by the way. So still have to check the volts on my battery eventhough its brand new? Is the fuel filter hard to change is its the culprit? Bust asl long as its not the starter or alternator I would be fine and im not gonna cough up alot for this repair.

If you have a battery light after it starts it is most likely the alternator...new battery has nothing to do with fixing the alternator which charges the battery.
fuel filter is not hard to change...just don't smoke or use a drop light etc...do it outdoors, flashlight only if you need light...get a manual or U-tube it.

Engine would not crank if it was a bad starter, bad alternator would not prevent a car from starting as long as the battery currently has 12.4 volts as it sits now.
get some gas and good luck!

@smolk I didnt removed the back seat but I can hear the buzzing sound from the front, but like what you said its priming. But I wish its nothing major and also if thats the case of the pump I will do it but I'll try to put some more gas in the to try it.

To remove the rear seat, simply pull up on the front lower edge of the cushion, then pull forward. It comes right out.
There is no on-line store here, however, we have several site sponsors listed on the sponsor page. Many of them have great prices and fast shipping. Lately, a lot of us have been recommending www.oembimmerparts.com for their prices, fast shipping, and very knowledgeable staff.

Maybe your cheaper price is for the pump alone and not the assembly. The assembly can be dropped right in; not sure how difficult it is to change the pump alone. A new gasket is advised also.

Smolck asks the right questions again! Awesome.
