Power steering fluid (Which to use?)

Should I use "Red Line D4 Synthetic Power Steering Fluid" for my PS flush on a 03' 540i? If so should i get 1 or 2 quarts?

Just want to be 100%, as Bavauto says to check prior.

No, get two quarts of synthetic ATF, not power steering fluid.

+1 on the ATF, look at the cap, it should say ATF on it.
To help you flush the system quickly remove the drain plug on the bottom of the PS pump.
That will drain most of the fluid out of the system. You can refill and drive it around the block a few times then drain and refill again with your second quart.

While you have the system drained you could remove the resevoir, unscrew the filter screen inside and flush it out with gas or some other solvent. When you drain the system you will see a small torx screw at the bottom. The screen pic is before cleaning, not too bad, but worth the 15 min to remove and clean.

VAC underdrive pulleys for the PS pump and waterpump.
IIRC they slow both down by 12%, must be worth all of 3-4 HP. I'll take it.

I used Mobil 1, but any top shelf synthetic will work.

BTW, Jim, you must wash your engine weekly!

Wow JimLev I don't know how you keep all that so clean, especially a 540i.

The problem with Mobil 1 is that nobody seems to be stocking it anymore and I have to order it from NAPA, so just go with any universal synthetic ATF since this system isn't too picky with fluids.

REDLINE D4 ATF has my vote. I've been using these for all my cars and so far no complain whatsoever!

Redline, Amsoil, or Mobil 1 ATF's are all very good IMO.
You can also use Castrol Multi-vehicle Import ATF for ~$5 a quart, and Valvoline Dexron VI (full synthetic) found at Autozone.

My $.02

Drain it, DO NOT USE solvent to clean it. Atf has much much higher viscosity and will pour out in the coldest of winters. Plus it has Many Many more detergents in it than OIL that is how BMW in the beginning got away with the 'lifetime' fill of our Auto Trannies. That said due to its position in the circuit the torx drain plug is the lowest point and there isn't a pan to drain, So I'd just get it to operating temp pull the cap off the reservoir and then pull the plug it will drain out completely. ATF also has seal conditioners in it that are good for your seals and solvents would eat at it, plus any left over solvents would NOT be good for your pump.

Then go to Autozone or Advance and get some good tranny fluid...no real need to go crazy here. This is a lubricant and pump agent, which ANY good quality ATF will do. This like our tranny fluid should be changed every couple of years,

Again my $.02 GL

I think the lesson here is what I learned from Oil, Clean is far more important than BRAND. IF you keep it clean it will last a good long time...

I said to clean the resevoir and screen with gas or solvent when it is disconnected, not the whole system.

Dr Z, edjack, it stays clean because it never sees winter and generally isn't driven in any bad weather. Got 3 cars so it's easy to keep this one clean.

Thanks for the input, the parts come in alot faster than expected from AutoHausAZ, so i'll be replacing it today. Wish me luck!

The fluid is so old and brown, the PO's must have never changed it..ever..

As a side question: What size hose clamps should I buy?

Go to home depot and buy the stainless steel hose clamps instead of the regular zinc-plated ones. Its a lot stronger. Get a 22-47mm and you'll be set.

Go to the dealer and get OEM screw-type hose clamps.
They are best, and designed to work with the OEM hoses.
You can also get the hose clamps from AutoHausAZ and EAC.

Thanks!
