2013 electronics update - any info?

Has anyone heard about what the 2013 electronics update will bring?

I know BMW Canada said that CAs should warn customers buying the M5, that there will be an a significant electronics update for all F10 models in July that early buyers will not recieve.

I am guessing at a minimum we will get F30 HUD features like speed limit info and entertainment info.

Doesn't affect me. US M5 doesn't begin production till July along with all the other 2013 F10s. Only Canada is getting 2012 M5s.

My ED date is Sept 1.

The updated cluster looks amazing (much better than the glitzy LCD display in newer Jags)

^ Looks like speed limit display is coming (and B&O)

Wow, it seems like a stupid decision for BMW to screw over Canadian owners, especially since they pay more for the cars. This is exactly like the 1st MY E90 M3s. They updated the iDrive in the second year.

I don't think they decided to screw them over. They actually gave very explicit directions to sales advisors (CAs) to warn customers that there would be a "significant electronics update" in July before accepting the orders.

This is what BMW told dealers in Canada:
"Please note that BMW USA announced availability of the M5 Sedan in the U.S. market as a MY2013 as of July 2012 production. BMW Canada's M5 production will follow the same model year schedule. Also note that there is a material change expected to the M5's vehicle electronics as of July 2012 production. The change will not impact the output or performance of the M5. Additional details of the change will be available in the later part of Q2 2012. With the model year and vehicle electronic changes expected as of July 2012 production, please ensure your customers consider this information before placing an order between 03/12-06/12 production."

The Canadians on the M5 Board who have taken early delivery are well aware of this. But since most M5 buyers care only about performance, this didn't seem to bother them.

I have a feeling there will be a different approach to the display by M division. None of the displays above really make sense.

I wonder if they will stick with the needles. Personally I prefer real needles, with a changeable background (i.e. something inbetween the current blackpanel and the images posted above).

Definitely not. That is the one and only piece of technology that separates the 650iGC from the 550i. I think they would want to maintain the $30k price premium by keeping that difference.

No current plans for the twin scroll twin turbo V8 in an F10 at this time.

But the 550iGT will come with the 450hp engine (stated in the article). Why not for the 550i?
So what's the deal? n63tu will appear in 550i in MY2014 model, then LCI in MY2015? Seems like a good marketing plot to me. But we got screwed!

Quote:
Power output of the V8 engine has been boosted by 30 kW/43 hp to 330 kW/450 hp and maximum torque increased by 50 to 650 Nm. In spite of significantly higher performance (BMW 550i Gran Turismo: 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds instead of the previous 5.5 seconds), it was possible to reduce fuel consumption (9.2 l/100 km) and the CO2 emission level (214 g/km) yet again. This power unit strengthens BMW's lead in the segment in terms of the relation between driving pleasure and fuel economy even further.

It would be nice if they gave the 550 sedan the n63tu as well. They boost in fuel economy would be nice even without the horsepower bump.

That said, I suspect they don't want to eat into their M5 sales by reducing the advantage the M5 has over the 550. It would also mean that those that were debating between an M5 and the 550xi might be pushed more towards the 550xi.

I was hoping the new update for MY2013 would have the increase, but if not, it means I will pull the trigger sooner than later.

The 550GT shares the same platform as the 650iGC.

Maybe they are saving it for a forthcoming M550i/xi

Very big is probably right - as in $6,000 big ones (something like that in the A6 Audi).

I was in a friend's Audi with the B&O sound system this weekend. Sports talk radio and the Rangers game sounded no better than ours.

+1!!!!!! lol... it isn't magic, any audio components can't suddenly make a crappy transfer, or poor (compressed) signal better, it will simply make it the best it will sound in that state.

Thats like saying if I take an Iphone into a movie theater and shoot a movie, if I come home and have 30k worth of video editing equipment it will suddenly be like a Blu-ray, when at its best you could only enhance an already lowly transfer.

That new instrument cluster is a nod to the BMW i8's. Little hints of convergence...

The i8's cluster is nevertheless vastly more advanced if the rendition in this video holds true.

For comparison, here's the Jaguar's:

I want to know what this cluster is. Looks a lot like the standard one, but tweaked.... No mention in the text of what it's for.
