Raer CV axles
I am having trouble finding the correct rear cv axles for my 84 533i. Any suggestions?
The shop ordered from two different sources and when they arrived they were not correct. |

You may want to rebuild your existing ones. There were a number of DIY posts on the Mye28.com forum. Do a search there and you should find lots of info. Otherwise you can try buying an entire rear differential assembly with axles, etc. from someone parting out an E28. Good luck.

Are there different types? The local parts store and shop would look up the part , 1984 BMW 533i , and the wrong CV axle showed up twice. One part store told me it depended on what month of 84 that the car was built. Do they just not know what they are doing? I am leaning towards having them both rebuilt to be sure I have the right one , but it is a little pricy. If I had good confidence in buying even one used one that would save me some money.

I just bought two Cardone remanufactured CV axles (P/N 609064) from Rockauto for $60 apiece with a $37 core deposit. They came in looking mint and installed perfectly. Having never done CV joints before I was impressed that these came dry and you had to pack them yourself and transfer the end caps off the old axles onto the new ones. This gave me the chance to inspect the joint for wear and tooling marks before smearing grease over it and losing that chance. All four joints looked like new and were very nice and tight. I just needed to replace all four boots but for the price of complete axles with new CV joints it didn't make sense to do all of the work to replace just the boots and repack the old joints for a very minor cost savings.
This was for my 1988 535i, but according to Rockauto it's the same axle used on the 525i, 528e, 533i, and 535i. I believe hearing that somewhere else too, that all of the axles are interchangeable. O'Reilly also has a cheap option for $75 with no core deposit and return necessary if you have one local to you: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...1424&ppt=C0362 If you do go with the Rockauto solution, I'm jealous because they just lowered the price again. I paid $80 apiece a couple weeks ago with a $67 core deposit. |

Yes, all e28 have the same rear parts. The diffs might be different but the rest is the same. So you can use rear haft shafts from any e28.
