E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Potential Owner

Hello! New potential BMW owner and first timer to the BMW community.

So i'm very seriously considering purchasing a beautiful MY08 135i. It has 28k miles on it but i've heard about the reliability horror stories. The service history shows it had all injectors changed as well as something with the rear lights and some recalls like the seatbelts. My question is whether it's worth the risk or not? It didn't say whether the hpfp was swapped. Is the fuel pump isssue an isolated incident or will it be a recurring problem ie - go through several pumps. I'm not afraid of minor issues but powertrain problems and recurring expensive repairs are a major turn off. Input?

I had that car and I had all the problems you listed. I think the fuel pump problem is fixed and there is a 10 year warranty on it. There is a recall on the hpfp so if it hasn't been changed they will do it.

Mein Auto: From BMWs to Porsches
I purchased a CPO '08 135i convertible last September with about 34K on the odometer and no issues whatsoever, unless you count incredibly fun as an issue, to date.

Well that 10 year warranty on the recalled pump is a relief. Anyone here over the 100k mark on their 08? I'm still wading through threads debating the reliability of the N54 vs the newer N55

Not sure the N55 has been out long enough for long-term reliability judgement, my impression is the N54 is a little easier to mod to higher HP.

That said, the extended warranty should make the hpfp and turbos not much of a problem. I tried to talk my wife into an 09 135i with the manual, but she ended up opting for the 128i. As she said "This car is too fast for me!"

The N54 is the better engine, the N55 was an economy move.
