I was driving around just fine today. Excited that I purchased my registration and plates. Stopped at the BMW dealership to get my plates put on. Started the car to leave and BOOM: the check engine soon light came on...
Help!

Don't know... I thought I might take it to Advanced Auto and get them to do the free diagnostic check... Not sure if they can do it for a BMW...???

Yes they are able to scan your codes then come back here or google. Also, pick yourself an ObdII scanner or better, I bought a simple obd reader from eBay for about $25 shipped.
Edit: I see you have an x5, check in on the X5 sub forum. Good luck sir

If you need to have the dealer put the plates on, you probably don't have the skills required to DIY.
