Just had water pump replaced and now oil leak found

Hi.. We've just had to have the water pump replaced and while it was with the mechanic he found oil right along the underside of the block, he said it looks like its been running down from somewhere and sprayed/spread along the underside.

Im picking it up today, but am wondering they had to add 4ltrs of oil, they're not sure where the leak is coming from, but I have had no alerts on the dash other than when the water pump went (luckily not requiring a new radiator).

Have not noticed any power loss and other than a bit of blue smoke occasionally when starting from cold which clears relatively quickly.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

We have a 2001 X5 4.4i with 103000k's on the clock
