Why Does The TPM System In Our Cars Suck?...

...They seem to go off almost at random intervals. Checks of the tire pressure reveal no problems whatsoever. The TPM's in my Acura TL gave me actual tire pressure in each tire. This just gives you an idiot light ("Left rear tire is low"). At this point when this happens I just reset the system and go on my merry way. I figure if it's really a problem it will go off again in a few minutes. In that instance I would (again) check tire pressures manually and/or bring it in to the dealership to let them figure it out.

But c'mon now...you can't throw in TPM's that give me the actual pressure in the tires when my lowly TL did just that?

Really?

Hmm I never actually had this issue. When my TPMS goes off, it actually tells the truth. Weird though.

It's happened a few times. I believe the first time it had something to do with a drop in temperature. Not really a big deal but annoying because I now have no faith in what it is telling me.

When mine alerted a year ago there was a screw in the front left with a slow leak.

Rolflats wouldn't have visually indicated until it was too late to save the tire.

Maybe you should give them a once over to be sure.

Temp change / drop can cause an alert.

Hopefully its not just in your head

I agree, the system sucks. It throws low air warnings, but I want to know actual PSI. iDrive has the information from the sensors, but why don't they just show us the individual pressures?

I was minvan shopping with my father and the MY12 Sienna shows PSI for each tire in the readout. The X5 costs almost $30k more. Come on BMW

Way to go DC!
I wonder it will work in my European specced car.
Overhere you will be charged 328 euros for the extra (!) sensor readouts in figures.
Never had a warning on the F11 system though.
The E61 system warned me twice accurately without any false allerts.

Funny, I just had a very slow leak caused by a small nail fixed yesterday (new PSS tire for safe high-speed driving is ordered ) and experienced exactly the opposite:
I do see the actual pressures (European model) but didn't get any warning!

But I think there's a simple explanation: In my case the pressure never dropped below the recommended pressure for standard 18"/19" tires, and I'm not aware that the TPM system would actually "know" what particular tires are on the car.

I too was totally dumbfounded that BMW does not show the actual pressures. My last car (Lexus) didn't either. Twice I pulled off a busy freeway (in a not so nice part of town) to check my tires because I got a warning. Both times the tires all had at least 30lbs in them. GM has been showing actual pressures in most of their vehicles for over 10 years now.
