MY13 F30 gets revamped iDrive

Looks like the MY12 owners get screwed by BMW

Quote:
Starting as of July 2012 production, the next generation Navigation Professional system (609) will be available on the 5 Series Sedan, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series Sedan and ActiveHybrid 3. Although the link above doesn't mention the F30, it will also be available on the F31 touring and should be available on the F30 3 series as of July, per RWFG:

This new system offers faster processing and an enhanced design over the current system and incorporates several great new features:

Streamlined radio/media menu structure
Improved navigation submenu structure
Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information
Weather information in navigation map
POI enrichment*
GoogleTM autocomplete*
* requires BMW Assist Convenience Plan.

Who is RWFG? What's your source for the rumor that the new iDrive is coming to the F30?

Some of that stuff is likely only coming to Europe.

Also, if there's no new hardware involved, then it could be added to current cars via a FW update.

I am definitely hoping that it can be updated via FW. I am sure all of the hardware is the same. And from what I am reading about the NAV, that is the weakest link in the car. BMW, should invest a little more into the NAV.

The problem is, it could come to Europe initially then show up in north america cars next year in later production.

If it for sure is coming to the US then that's good news for me, as I'm ordering a 2013 this month

It also looks like this is far from confirmed to be coming to the 2013 F30 at all. Simply two users who had BMW CAs, reps, etc, tell them that it's going to show up in the July build cars, which sounds sketchy to me.

MY13 F10s and ActiveHybrid 3s are getting the new iDrive from 07/12 build, therefore it can be assumed that the F30 will to.

Hey, I hope it's true and I hope some of the new features (better nav and traffic systems) make it to the US. BMW seems to have more sophisticated traffic and nav stuff for Europe than what they offer in the US market.

If not getting Navigation, are there any changes for the base iDrive system as well?

No. That's why they specifically mention the 3er Active Hybrid. They can push the new Nav as an improved feature of the AH.

I LMFAO at this attitude - . They bought a consumer grade, highly disposable, quickly depreciating product and they got the product as is. There was no screwing. They made the decision to buy. Nobody promised them free upgrades for life and took the promise away. They bought as is with 100% knowledge the very next day BMW could drop the price by 20k and up the HP by 100%.

Agreed, if they were going to put it on all of them they would advertise it as such.

Email, face book, google, dictation? Sounds like something a smart phone can do already. Good luck with the i drive interface. They should just focus their efforts on a great Audio/NAV/HUD instead of trying to be an iphone.

Audio and HUD are already class leading. NAV, they're getting there. It's fantastic that they're spending the time to revamp iDrive. The next step in technology is full smartphone integration with your car and BMW is working towards that.

I agree that full smartphone integration is the next logical step in automotive telematics.... and will be a way to continue to sell up-charge option packages for this tech, which is worth every penny to many buyers.

On the flip side I do not agree that it's a given that this new i-drive is going to show up on the 2013 F30. If it was coming to the regular line F30 the original information would have highlighted that.

Maybe we will get lucky and it will be introduced into the line relatively early in production though, so that those getting cars built later this year luck out and get the new features.

Well said. But the ornamental bundling of iPhone DNA seems to be a corporate mission unfolding.

I believe it was confirmed in the source thread that 609 is the same order code in the 2012 cars.

Oh okay. I was under the impression that 609 was some kind of new code. I'll let you know in August.

This is why I steer clear of in car tech add-ons, like nav. The technology is deprecated the minute its available to consumers, and I like to keep my cars for much longer than that.

It depends on how much time you spend in the car per day and how "plugged in" you are to the Internet. People might eschew the tech now but every year that goes by it will be harder to resist this level of tech, especially in a premium marquee vehicle.

It really is funny that people still act like a 3 series is a premium vehicle.

What a pompous statement to make. Considering that the average new car purchase is $25000 or so and the average person, in this crappy economy even struggles to justify that kind of purchase, yes, I would say that a car that as tested by all the publications is about $50,000 yes, that qualifies as luxury (aka premium) for most. Maybe not for you, but certainly for most people.

Wealth/luxury is a relative thing.
