NAPA got me on their "gold" filter A $16. it's not paper and won't degrade from synthetic oils. The M5's are spec'd for more viscous engine oils at OT as they should with more internal friction and shearing forces. Check the oil data spec's on mobile 1 0-60 vs Liqui Moly or the BMW spec Castrol. If The Mobile 1 is about on spec with BMW's, which I have not checked, for the money, why not use it? I use BRAD PENN 20w-50 semi- synthetic motor oil in a Jaguar strait 6 cylinder "built" engine that has high lift cams and flat tappets. I see that the distributor that ships me the PENN oil carries 10w-60 Liqui Moly @ $45/ 5 quart jug or less for 4 jugs. I use them, MATRIX, because their overall cost w/ shipping is good. http://matrixsyntheticoils.com/store...oils_auto.html Transportation costs have always been a big factor in oil and gasoline end user pricing....just ask the folks in California. I hope this may be additive and helpful.
Even Mobil admits they DO NOT make an oil that is compatible or approved for use in BMW M cars.

Here are the recommendations from BMW on M car oil:

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines:
Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil
Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420)

If Castrol High Performance Synthetic Oil is not available and you need to add oil between oil changes, only use synthetic oils with the following specifications for M vehicles:

Viscosity - preferred SAE 10W-60
Alternative - SAE 10W-40, SAE 5W-50 or SAE 10W-50

Stick with ANY good name brand synthetic and you'll be good. I've never noticed a difference in any oil I've used...chances are the rest of the car is going to fall apart before a BMW motor fails internally from wear. I run Lubro-Moly right now, but for the majority of my vehicle's life (181,000 miles) it has run Castrol. Newer oils have excellent detergency and breakdown resistance, so I wouldn't hesitate to go with most any synthetic.
