Was Safelite Deceptive?...

I just had my 2011 328 sedan windshield replaced by Safelite through my insurance due to a nasty crack...
I specifically asked for "BMW" glass when talking to the Safelite SA...

As the technician was finishing up, I noticed a "blue" tinted zone at the top that I thought I had never seen before, almost like the tinted glass you used to get in the '70's and '80's when you bought a new car with the "air conditioner option," back when AC was optional...

When questioned, the technician said that the old (factory original) windshield had the same "blue zone" at the top, that I probably just didn't notice it...

I know I could have demanded to look in the truck to confirm this, but I didn't want to get into a confrontational situation while the guy was in midst of putting my baby back together...
Now I'm thinking that maybe I'm "disremembering" not having a blue strip on the original windshield...

New glass says "Pinkerton" and has a small black "BMW" emblem in black above it...

Keep staring at the car, can't decide if it looks right, or if that's the way it always looked (with blue zone on windshield against space gray car)...
Am I going crazy?...

I'm no expert, but it sounds about right. I have Pinkerton glass on my e90. Can't recall the blue tint, but will check on it when I leave the office.

Pinkerton is the glass manufacturer for BMW and the logos you see are exactly correct.

they actually gave you the upgraded windshield. the green tint banded ones are solar reflective. bmw decontented to a plain glass windshield with no tint band late 2009.

my 07 had a tint band. my 2010 does not.

msrp:
no tint band: 373
grey tint band (not reflective) 450
green tint band (reflective) 570

My early-2009 has the shaded area at the top. Many people of late have been complaining that newer BMWs no longer have the shaded section.

I am glad to see a windshield releated post on here. I am going to get a rock chip filled soon before it spreads. Anyone have any recommendations in the LA area? I got a quote for $68 to fill it. Does that sound about right?

Negative, only if it is specifically covered by the insurance. I have a geico comprehensive glass coverage with no deductible, others policies might not carry it or offer at a premium expense.

No shaded band at the top of my 2011 E90. Good to know this info, with all the "pits" in my windshield, I may have to replace it in the next year or so. BMW glass is pretty darn soft.

Pretty sure most will cover the fill, just not full replacement.

Nope. I have driven my 2007 e90 through Chicago many times with the iPass behind the green tint line and never had a problem.

I don't see how if you have no insurance coverage for glass
I've never heard of a real life story where insurance company went an extra inch for a customer in eating a bill for something that is not covered intentionally

Every comprehensive coverage policy I've ever purchased has (or would have) covered the full cost of repairing a fixable crack without the need for a special glass policy rider.

Maybe the need for a rider is a state-specific requirement...?

I have State Farm in CA and my insurance agent told me that they do not have Glass riders in CA anymore and that State Farm stopped covering windshield repairs because they say too many further repairs or replacements after the initial repair. Pretty annoying, I am not sure State Farm is the best for CA insurance… I may have to shop around a bit.

This is correct. State farm does not cover the repair in CA.

Safelite will come to your home and do the patch for something like $50.

Oh, and one comment on State Farm is that every single time I've had a problem they've backed my ass 100%. So, I'm sticking with them.

Allstate in CA will cover 100% of glass repair for a chip. For a replacement I just have to pay my deductable. At least that's how my policy is, and I don't have anything extra to cover glass.

Yep and I have had some big claims (not my fault). I have had State Farm fo close to 20 years and refuse to switch to another carrier. I pay a very significant premium for high coverage, but at least I know I can rely on my carrier should something happen. Also, my experience is that patching rock chips is usually not a good way to go. Many times the repair is unsightly and ends up needing a complete replacement. I would recommend having the insurance company pay for a full windshield replacement. Also, if you are leasing with BMWFS and the chip is in the wiper sweep they will still charge you on lease return. Just a FYI.

State Farm is the same way. However, those of us who have high deductibles end up paying for most or all of the cost......

The insurance company will not automatically pay for a full replacement. And, if a chip is repaired right, it won't be unsightly or need replacement.

A minor correction, the manufacturer's name of oem BMW glass is Pilkington, not Pinkerton.
If you're ever in Poland you could be run off the road by dozens of Pilkington tractor trailers highballing southwest for Germany. Either the glass must be made in Poland (they're good at glass) or it's coming in through Gdansk.

Rasins are not as clear as glass, it will be visible if one look closely. Some chips will develope into hair line cracks after the repair due to the stress being apply on the windshield.

Any thoughts on BMW lease and replacement glass?

My chip/crack is too big and I have a lease. The replacement glass is $400, the dealer wants $1900. My deductible is high, so I would rather just replace the glass with Safelite, or the company my insurance sent me to. I'm just concerned that I will have to replace it again at lease end if I do it "wrong".

Your lease turn-in requirements (read your lease contract) may require BMW approved glass. Safelite should offer this. Same with the tires...they may have to be "BMW approved" tires, but various dealers apply various "hard ass" restrictions depending on IF you are rolling into another car with them.

I turned in a E92 lease with about $800 fender damage that was "waived," as well as a lost key fob ($250), after a LONG series of negotiations with multiple LA area dealers. A dealer's willingness to "make the deal," often wins out...I turned down two other offers. Big advantage to having multiple dealers in a small selling area, but the BIGGEST advantage is that you'll buy a car from the dealership.
