Please help me determine if my car has the sport package??

Is there a website that will give me full details of what was on the car including the options added including sport package? The previous owner doesn't know so I'd like to confirm.

I want to get lowering springs and I'm not sure if mine has the lower springs & shocks/struts already.

Car details:

1999 540iA
I have the 3 spoke steering wheel
Shadowline Trim
Staggered 17" wheels
But not sure if the seats are the sports seats? Even though it has a lot more adjustments then my 97 528i but the sear extension also does not extend.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

you do not have sport seats, but it does look like you have comfort seats...which i think were optional on sport package cars.

By all account you do have the sport package less the sport seats if what you list was not modified in any way:

Shadowline trim
3 spoke steering
staggered wheels

Pictures of the seat control buttons would help determine what you may have.

Confirm list of factory options here with last 7 characters of your VIN#:

You have some of the sport package items (shadowline, steering wheel, and it looks like lower ride height) but you may have the sport package without the sport seats. An option was the comfort seats like the ones in the e38. Do you have lumbar adjustments and a split seat back? Those are on the comfort seats, and you could still have the (partial) sport package with them.

You can look up all factory options for FREE using your VIN using this method:
http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...catalogue.html

Click on "Visit the electronic parts catalog" link
Window opens in new page
Login with username: eu111111 ; password: bmwetk1
Another new page opens. Ignore the first two pages but do not close them.
On the new page type in the last 7 digits of your vin and click >>
Click "Options" at the very top of the page in the grey bar

Print and save!

I'm surprised this isn't more widely used actually

Waehrik, the reason the site you posted (which is a great site full of info) isn't used as much is because the site that DVSGENE posted in his reply gives the same build information in 3 easy steps...and most are just looking for the build sheet info and that's all:
  1. click the link (if you've saved it or bookmarked the site) then
  2. type in the last 7 digits of the VIN then
  3. answer a simple equation.

The hardest part about using the rubmw.ru site is if you're not good at simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. If you haven't done so yet...give it a try and you'll see what I mean.

I was told that if a 99 540 is not a 6 speed manual it is not a true sport package..

What does "true sport package" mean to you? Since the 98 model year...BMW has offered a "sport package" option for the one or more e39 models with an automatic transmission. The sport packages have come with various included options...not all models may have all the same options featured in their package.

But again, what constitutes a "true sport pkg" to you or the person telling you that only the 540i/6 is a "true sport pkg". What would the 2003 540iA sport pkg be then...or the 98 or 99 or 00, or 01, or 02? Are these models equipped with the sport pkg for their build year not be a "true sport" because they may or may not have a feature from the model that someone believes is the "true sport"? Are they not "true sports" because they have an auto tranny? Again, what is the definition or criteria for an e39 to be a "true sport"?

1998

2003

Also note the mention of 1998 & 1999 sport packages in both the 6 & 8 cylinder model descriptions in the info below from the e39 buyers guide:

From what I see this E39 only has the M steering wheel and shadow-line. No seats. If I had to guess I would say this is a 540i with a couple M options. I don't think it is a complete sport package/partial sport package like 'waehrik' had posted above. This is an opinion, I am far from an expert. Nice car though, good condition.

The OP (original poster) followed the information given to him by the board and pulled up the build sheet information for his car...and it DOES have the sport pkg...of which he also posted the build sheet info in post #8 above.

If you have the last 7 digits of the car's VIN...you can enter those digits (plus correctly answer a simple math question) and you can get a list of how the car came equipped from the factory...this link was posted multiple times in the replies above...it should work for you like it did for the OP: http://www.rubmw.ru/vincode/eng/

Again, you MUST answer the math question correctly as well as entering the correct last 7 digits of the car's VIN:
  • + = addition
  • - = subtraction
  • * = multiplication
  • / = division

As others have said

You definitely have the sport package. also like others have pointed out you do have 'comfort' seats and not sport seats.

Car looks exactly like my 99 99-540 sport pkg, same wheels, same everything cept I have a manual tranny, and they did make Auto's with the sport pkg...so FWIW you do have a sport pkg with comfort seats...

I think a 98 540iA with true sport package should have at least the following 3 items:

Code
Description (interface)
Description (EPC)

S339A SHADOW LINE Shadow-Line
S481A SPORTSITZE FUER FAHRER/BEIFAHRER Sports seat
S704A M SPORTFAHRWERK M Sports suspension

It should have 17" maybe even 18" factory wheels
S291A LM RAEDER/KREUZSPEICHE/2TEILIG BMW light alloy wheel, cross spoke 2 pce

and in my case a 3.15 differential not listed but confirmed which OP also has S204A.

So by all means he does have sports package as Q points out.

The 98 549iA sport pkg didn't include the 12-way sport seats as "standard equipment"...they were still an option that could be added. It wasn't until the 6/99 build date that the 12-way sport seats became included in the 540iA sport pkg as standard equipment. Up until the 6/99 build date...the sport seats were a no cost option for the sport pkgs . Click this link to open or download a PDF of e39 equipment & options for the 1997-2002 model years: https://acrobat.com/#d=6n5MH0v*nOIY4a7SGi1yAQ

Note the info below about the "new for 98" models...the 12-way sport seats aren't listed as being part of that year's sport pkg for the 540iA...but again, they could be ordered as an option:

Oh yeah.... and then there was the "option" of the seat back storage pouch too depending on build date.

OP, I just noticed that you may be missing the left inner fender and belly pan from your second picture.

Of course that has nothing to do with a sport package...

Thank you "waehrik" for posting the link to finding options on a specific car way back on 5/22/12. I just purchased an '02 530i on 10/2/12 and was able to find out what options I truly have on it. This is a great forum....I just started using it.

In the US, Sport pkg =/= M-sport. So bumpers between sport pkg and non-sport pkg are the same.

That Russian VIN reader informed me my car has S441A, the "smoker package" .... LOL!

I spot three ashtrays and a lighter.... Is there more? Couldn't find the hookah plug-in....

Is there any e39 configuration that -doesn't- come with ashtrays?
