Real World Gas Mileage?

Hi,

Waiting to get confirmed ED dates for an E92 M3

Just wondering if real world mileage is really like 12-13 mpg? I've had both an e46 330 and e90 335 and both did surprisingly well. I'd say I have a 50 / 50 stop and go to open freeway mix of driving.

I tried to search and got all kinds of other models but not too many m3s...thanks!

I'm doing my level best to get that down tho.

I have had mine for over 3 1/2 years now and my Gas mileage is consistently 14mpg. When I take a trip that is predominantly interstate, I get 16mpg. My car is a manual and I usually shift in the 4-5k range.

Going to and from work a mix of freeways and streets and with quite frequent stop and go on freeways(engine running and not going anywhere) about 16-18 MPG.....solid freeways with no traffic(driving all the way without stopping for traffic) I get 20-21 with normal driving(no drag racing from a stop, etc)...i.e. going from LA to OC(newport beach) on a weekend without traffic.....

You are going to get different answers from everyone since each has his/her own unique driving habits, different tranny (DCT, 6MT) and mixture of city/hwy driving.

That said, if I drive mine "properly" as it was meant to be driven, my average is around 15-16 mpg (6MT, 30city/70hwy). If I baby it, I get about 20 mpg.

I saw a noticeable difference (about +3 mpg) after the oil change at around 8k miles. So, the answer is yes (at least in my experience).

daily commute - 20 miles one way - Metro DC - mix of twisty 2 lanes - parkways that may or may not be heavily congested - and downtown traffic - I consistently average 18 mpg - range 17 - 20 mpg.

weekend interstates - to the mountains to the west - 21 - 22 mpg - as high as 24 mpg.

"spirited" mountain/back roads - 16 - 17 mpg

Above mpg is over 6700 miles - car is 2012 equipped with DCT and ZCP.

I have no complaints

M3 = bliss

If your E90 had I-drive and you know what your normal average speed was you can get a fairly good idea what an M3 will give you if there is an owner here with a similar average speed. That is if your average speed will be similar with an M3 as with your E90. I remember a thread like this for the F10 550 where consumptions varied between the low 20 mpgs to low 10 mpgs. It soon showed that the 20 mpgs guys were in the 50 mphs in avg. speed while the low 10 mpgs where in the low 10 mphs, both citing a mix of city/hwy. So consumption without average speed is a pretty useless indicator.

Thanks for all the info! I like to think I'd also be a 'proper' driver so I'm looking forward to 14-15mpg....which isn't all that bad...considering the reward

Funny you should mention that. A couple of months ago I realized my oil level was going down because of the drop off in gas mileage. Oddly it took quite some distance after topping off for it to come back to my 16.x average (I have a bit of a heavy foot and rarely drive in the city.)

I really don't know what my actual mileage is. I can say as my M3 is becoming more "broken in" it's getting better and better mileage. In fact, I'm almost at the point of complete satisfaction with MPG. I didn't buy this car for fuel economy.

I drive about 1000 miles/month average 15.5 mpg with ~80% streets/20% highway. At the track I get about 8 mpg, but it's a lot more fun

I dunno, I bought it with 22k in Feb, so could be. I defer to those who bought new.

I have had my M3 for about 18 months and I have tracked my MPG with each fill-up. The range has been 11.1 to 1.8 with my average being 14.5. It used to bug me heading to the gas station every few days but I finally realized that is a small trade-off for having a very powerful car on the road!

'09 Bone-Stock DCT Coupe w/15k miles: My wife gets 16-18 mixed driving, I regulaly get 24-28. She drives agressively, I drive well ahead, rarely use the brakes and use the cruise a lot. She won't back into the garage either, go figure.

I have a 40 mile commute to work. Probably 70% highway 30% city. But I do tend to get on it a bit in the city. Done a few launches (I have DCT with Comp Pack) Average 75mph on the highway and I'm getting a combined 19MPG. I think that's pretty good!

I thought my mileage, I had previously posted, was good, but your mpg is just crazy...

Maybe it's the heat of the Mid-Atlantic v. Wisconsin, but my mileage in general has decreased
around 1 - 2 mpg as the summer temps have risen - Hwy 18 - 20, spirited 14.5 - 16.

...then again, maybe, my lower mpg reflects my increased familiarity with my M's capabilities, and my willingness to explore those capabilities, especially since my M is such a willing eager partner.

Today I drove 180 miles and only got 21 mpg but this was the first time I have used Kwik Trip "top tear" premium gas.
I definitely do better on Shell

I definitely know how to use the M button. I have learned in DE events to look far ahead. on the road this reduces need for un-needed breaking and allows for "spitrited" diving.
