F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

BMW to release 1 series sedan in early 2015

BMW 4 door 1 series

Sweet.

Quote:
The BMW 1-Series line is reportedly looking to expand with a four door rear-drive saloon version, that will be the spiritual successor to the E30 3-series four door.

The 1-Series has already spawned a sports coupe in the M135i, and a convertible cruiser variant, and next up will be a four door. Looking to compete against the new Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Audi A3, the 1-Series four door is following in line with high-end automakers moves to offer smaller car options in the luxury segment.

Was this an old article? I ask because it talks about the new 3 series as if the F30 hadn't been featured in BMW showrooms for a while now.

Tom
Autoguide is clueless, good catch - I went to the original Autocar article and there's a lot more info, and they mention the new 3.

BMW has hatched plans for a new BMW 1-series badged rear-drive junior saloon that is being pitched as the spiritual successor to the E30-generation 3-series four-door.

The car will play an integral role in meeting BMW's ambitious worldwide sales target of two million cars a year by 2020, and should become one of the firm's best sellers in key saloon markets such as North America and China.

The new four-door will join an expanded 1-series line-up as a rival to the upcoming third-generation Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA compact saloons, as well as the established Volkswagen Jetta.

It could go on sale as early as 2015 and will undercut BMW's perennial best-seller, the 3-series saloon, on price.

Before the four-door 1-series arrives, however, BMW will launch successors to today's first-generation 1-series coupé and convertible, codenamed F22 and F23 respectively and due in 2014.

Central among BMW's decision to push ahead with a 1-series saloon are the ever-increasing dimensions of the 3-series saloon. Since its introduction in 1975, it has grown by 269mm in length, 210mm in width and 49mm in height, taking it into a higher market segment.

Using a rear-wheel drive platform that shares some key elements with the latest, sixth-generation 3-series should ensure a sporting drive for the 1-series saloon.

The decision to adopt this rear-drive layout comes despite the creation of a new front-drive platform to be shared with Mini. It will be used for a new 1-series GT model in 2013, a rival to the Mercedes-Benz B-class and next year's third-generation Mini.

Four and six-cylinder engines will feature in the 1-series saloon line-up, while an all-electric version is also under consideration. Four-wheel drive will be an option.

Initially, the four-door 1-series will be built alongside hatchback, coupé and convertible models in Leipzig, Germany. In the longer term, it could also be built at BMW's Shenyang plant in China and a new facility earmarked for Santa Catarina, Brazil.

I don't like to buy new BMWs, when 2 year old ones are like 30% cheaper, but if this is good, I may have to Euro Deliver one in 2015.

The new 135i hatch has a really ugly front end though, hope the sedan gets a good nose job.

It had better be good because the new A3 sedan that was unveiled in Geneva is absolutely gorgeous.

I believe that was a concept car. The production sedan will probably look similar to this production 3 door.

what's that a reference to?

I can't drive any Audi - the center console in every Audi intrudes on my knee, even the A3. No idea why they design their cars like that, it's not a problem on equivalent VWs.

Turning the key on our Audi is like pulling the arm of a slot machine. Once in awhile you hit the jackpot and a bunch of lights go off on the dashboard. That happens to us about once every 3 months. Always a new light, always expensive to repair.

I for one would like to see smaller, simpler, and lighter cars. The new "1" may be physically smaller than the 3's but you can bet it won't be simpler and very doubful much lighter either.

Oh - for the days of e30's and e30 based Z3's again!!!

+1 but it'll never come from BMW or Audi. Subaru maybe.

If they keep cost, complexity, and weight down, I think a 1-series sedan like that could be a great addition to the lineup. I'd like to see them offer it in a base model with just enough power to be fun, the sport package, and a basic interior to save weight and cost (i.e. manual cloth seats, manual climate control, optional moonroof).
