Listening to "No Church in the Wild" or "Gliding (liquatech Mix)" on the BMW OEM system provides same excitement as listening to Arvo Part, Phillip Glass etc. I listen to all and much more. 45+ years of listening to recorded music, attending live performances, hifi electronics revisions, video events, movies... my appreciation of music and video is my perception creating my reality.

It's all about quality and the dynamic range of the sound. Not once did I turn on the stock stereo and not be disgusted with the poor separation, range, depth and volume of the sound. If you can not tell any difference btw poor, decent and exceptional sound, then consider yourself lucky. Unfortunately it sounds like the new B & O system is crap also, but were we really expecting BMW to go from poor to exceptional?

B&O is a little bit late for BMW

What took so long for them to offer this as an opt? I had it on my S8 and loved it, but I'm still not sure it was worth the 6800. I know it wasnt worth that, but going from the B&O to this system is ridiculous.

Really.

Interesting input from someone who has had the B&O is certainly worth listening to. I have the premium system, which is crap, but I wonder how bad the standard unit is. I'm a little bummed about the whole sound system now. I'm going to stick with my original thoughts of waiting to hear it before buying. If it's crappy, I'll stick with the premium system. It's what I have now and I'm used to poor, but can't tolertate a 8-track player sound that might come with the standard unit.

It is a 1400 watt system.

Sirius didnt sound that great, but everything else sounded unbelievable. I still don t think it was worth almost 7000. My wife's Bose system in her old Q7 sounded much better than what we have.

I have the standard sound system in my 2012 750Li and I think is sucks. I have adjusted and done everything I can to make it sound good and it still sucks. My Lexus had the Harmon Kardon and that sucker would rock.

HK owns Mark Levinson as well as others. Search Harman Audio.

During the early 90"s I briefly met the man Mark Levinson ...

E66/65, F01/F02 series uses Lexicon. BMW owner manual states Logic 7. Logic 7 is a Lexicon product/tradename.
"Logic 7 was notable for generating a convincing soundfield from seven loudspeakers when presented with either a stereo or 5.1 input." from link below.

True, I probably should have said Mark Levinson to be more clear. In any case, it still blows my current sound system away.

To be honest, the ML I had in my previous Lexuses don't sound too great. The sound is crisp and clear, but it doesn't have enough punch. Which model you have?

Why is that? So you're saying they could get a better system made for less money? Why wouldn't they do that then?

I'm not sure I'd agree that all systems are "fail" because you can get a better system for more money - that's just logical. In that regard, you could also say engine, seats, wheels, tyres, carpet, etc. - Fail. But I'd ask for more proof/examples where car manufacturers are not making good systems for the money spent.

Cars are a really poor listening environment, what with all the glass and sharp corners, and no head room. Car stereos are more about subwoofers and surround systems to mask the poor acoustics.

So what's the solution? Concert halls on wheels? Don't offer any sound system at all?

I have to think that auto companies are striking an overall balance, and making a reasonable attempt at it.
