Unlikely that a starter would just die suddenly without any warning signs IMO.

And the price sounds really high, but I hear that the X3 starter is relatively tough to remove and replace.

Haven't heard of too many failing on here, but there were 1 or 2 I think.

Can't comment on the price myself (although $900 does sound pretty high for a starter replacement); and I also haven't heard of many starter failures on the forum here...

But, starters can and do fail rather suddenly; I had one short out on my '89 Firebird last summer -- just after starting the vehicle. When it shorted out, it abruptly caused the engine to stop running, then the engine wouldn't crank or or anything; no sounds at all. Fortunately, this all happened in my driveway...

I was told by the mechanic that replaced the starter that it's more common for them to short out in hot weather than during any other time of the year.

Wonder if the dealership have ruled out the BST?
http://xbmw.blogspot.ca/2009/05/safe...-terminal.html

Or the immobilizer?

Or even some simple issue in the ignition switch?

(They could possibly have applied a high amperage source directly to the starter motor while your X3 was still in the parking lot and determined the starter was dead.)
