off the path, new car for my daughter

OK festers totally off the path.. but who do i trust when it comes to cars more then my fellow BMW enthusiasts..

i need to buy/lease a NEW car for my younger doughtier, sharing with her older sister just isn't working out!!!!

Not going crazy thinking 18-20K max!!! thought about maybe a used 3 series but they are over 20K or have 50K+++ miles on them..

Thinking of going the route of a Mazda 3?? A kia? A hyundai?? mini (but they also are higher priced) Nissan.....or inexpensive sub like kia sportage??

Anybody have any thoughts??

Also thinking should be front wheel or all wheel drive as we are New Yorkers!!!

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance... not a snob but just not my area of expertise.....

RWD for inexperienced driver in NY is a no go, unless snows are mounted.

I would suggest the Ford Focus or Hyundai Elantra. Both excellent cars. The Chevy Cruze is pretty nice too. I have been driving these cars from Hertz and I like them all. The cruise has a softer ride and is probably best for rough roads. The LTZ model has great standard equipment for a budget price.

The civic and corolla are among the worst cars in this segment. They have really fallen behind the competition.

I meant Camry or Accord , but I'd go TL/TSX (maybe not, as a quick search on carmax shows both those might be a tad above price range)

While it sticks in my throat, I have to admit that the Ford Focus is an awesome car. I have several friends that bought one for their kids and they've all worked out very well.

Subaru is good AWD option - not sure how they rank cost-wise, but I have a fair amount of experience with Subaru and they are great, run forever, and pretty tough cars (especially good for younger drivers )

New Kia's seem to do well, older ones not so much. Both my aunts bought the lowest-end Kia and they got an easy 6.5 - 7 years out of them before any major issues. The newer ones are better.

No family or direct experience with Hyundai, but I hear generally good things. They seemed to have gotten a bad rap many many years ago, and it sort of stuck.

I ride in one most days so I don't have to pay for gas or ezpass for work (big time cheap a$$ ), and the person I ride with dropped 150,000 miles on a 2007, and only had brakes and tires. I don't know much about reliability, but I wouldn't turn them away if I was on a budget.

Volvo C30 is a hip car for a girl that comes with the legendary Volvo safety promise and swedish winter abilities. It can make both kid and parents happy. If you negotiate well and perhaps do oversees delivery you might be able to squeeze it into your budget.

I'd second the Ford Focus or Fusion and I also like the VW Jetta or Nissan Altima.

Yup. Great car! Can't beat the Safe & Secure 5 years of factory scheduled maintenance and warranty either!

I have the new Focus 5 door as a third car. It is a really nice car for the money. The power is more than acceptable. Check it out.

Great to see the open mindedness about other brands.

Pardon the question ...... but ....... what does your daughter want?

7 years ago I was able to "bribe" my daughter to scrape the (out of state tuition) Clemson sticker off her VW Cabrio and go in state to Georgia .... by giving her my wife's 2002 330i.

She loved and has loved the car - still driving now with 109,000 miles surviving college and first job!

Anything 5 star in the crash test department and something with a low center of gravity so it won't be easy to roll.

I'm helping a friend look for a car in this price range. You can get some great lease deals right now on the Accord. $250/month for the LX, $0 upfront lease, $270 for the EX.

Otherwise, the usual suspects like the Honda Civic or Fit, Mazda 3, Ford Fusion. Nissan Altima is being replaced, so you could get a good deal there. And I'm sure that the Nissa Sentra would be a great deal.
