Just back from PCD

In order to add to the collective knowledge base:
Some details listed below may be new for 2013, some may not, but I will list several notables. I have just returned home from a PCD of a 2013 550.

Imperial Blue, Everest Grey, almost all the options except 4 wheel steering, B&O stereo, no xdrive (I live in the South). Msport with the standard 550Msport wheels.
EPA sticker says Valvetronic and double Vanos. I will look up the posted mileage tomorrow, too tired to go back out to the garage.
Owners manual claims it has the new instrument cluster that changes colors blurred red for sport, blue for ecopro - but it doesn't.
There is no ASS.
There is no EcoPro mode, only comfort+ thru sport +.
I really dislike the ringtone.
The HUD speedometer is white during daylight, orange after dusk. It focuses over the hood; I'd rather if the focal point was programmable so I could set it 20 feet down the road.

After years of telling the car to "dial name" then after pausing, the short cut name i had previously taught it, I don't like having to say "phone book" then someone's name, then "entry 1" then "entry 1" again, then "yes."

Although I ordered the premium audio, I don't seem to have the option to tune an equalizer. So far, audio quality FM in boonies/Sirius/iPhone via BT, sucks. Unimpressive. I think I have to turn off BT audio in order to get the audio thru the cable, which I expect to be much better. Gotta find my CDs.

The audio volume steering wheel controls are on the right,+\- buttons. The track or station up/down buttons which used to be on the left side of the steering wheel are gone. Now, just cruise control on the left. There's a thumb wheel on the right side which brings up a list (sometimes in the Idrive screen, always under the right gauge, right now I can't recall if that gauge is speedo or tach) which moves you thru a list of tracks/stations. Don't like that. can't just give it one push for 'next.'
When I first checked out the 2011 5 series, I thought the soft close doors were effete, but I already love them - and have already failed to close the doors on my 2006 several times, since I was closing softly.

The new I drive is cool; Nav is fast and smooth, but remains an exercise in frustration. I guess I will accommodate to it. Dynamic gps guidance worked well on my trip home. No exits to circle around and then get back on. YMMV.

Driving from Asheville to Gatlinburg on I40 was a heck of a lot of fun, especially when the trip follows driving a 550 on the race track at the PCD. I was surprised (in a negative way) that the wheels aren't well balanced by the factory and/or PCD. Notable vibration front and rear at 65 Going to have to take in in, or just replace the tires. It came with Dunlap Sport Maxx RF, staggered.

There was a neat antique and muscle car auto show in Gatlinburg/Pidgeon Fordge. As I walked around looking at the Chevelles, GTOs and SSs etc I couldn't help thinking of my 550 as "Otto" and how Otto could really f@ck up any of these cars in any contest.

When I arrived home, I was surprised to find that the horizontal interface at the roofline/windshield union has no rubber gasket. Just a relatively deep crevice wherein you can make out individual layers of the laminated windshield. Also, the plastic parts which fill in the attachment footprints for the roof rack don't fit particularly well.

More to follow if any occur to me tomorrow. Here's a quick iPhone photo, higher quality Nikons tomorrow.

About the vibration at 65 this is one of the main reasons I no longer have my 2012 F10 550 with similar options. I had the same tires too and after several dealer visits and balancing the problem never went away. I was even told at some point that it could be the roads in TN (right...) - Mainly drive on I40. Good luck to you - I hope you get it fixed!

Your post is concerning ..... you have omitted phase 1 of BMW ownership ..... this is the honeymoon and the best it will ever be!

Four Phases of BMW Ownership

Honeymoon - Ultimate Driving Experience, The Joy of Driving, euphoria, what a great car this is, nobody else has anything close to my beautiful car.
Reality - hmmm got a few kinks, some vibration, wind noise, road feel not what it used to be, NAV is lost ..... uh oh another payment due.
Search for the Guilty - why did BMW decontent the new model? my dealer lied to me, where is the BMW service level I was promised?
Punish the Innocent - I'll never buy another one of these

ps do get your tires / vibration resolved in the first 2,000 mile, after that BMW disavows any responsibility.

I forgot to mention this but this is right! I made the mistake to postpone taking the car to the dealer for 4 months (combination of work and winter/bad weather) so even though the car had the vibration issue since day one I had to pay for balancing etc. At the end it made no difference. It is really not the most productive way to spend your day visiting the dealer especially for a brand new car, driving around to replicate the problem etc.

If you drove back to Memphis you probably already have 600 miles+.

Thats odd. If you have Premium Audio, then you should for sure have an equalizer? I have it.
Agreed, with the ringtone and HUD.
I also wish they added RPM and/or gear selection on the HUD for manual mode.

To all, thanks for the responses.

PCD = Performance Center Delivery. It has it's own forum here on bimmerfest, and on BMWUSA.com. Briefly, you buy your car normally, but instead if taking it home from the dealer, it's shipped from the factory to the Center in South Carolina. There's a wait, but the reward is that while there they teach you a few habits of high performance driving (in their cars, no wear and tear on yours) and then you drive it home. It's free, but you have to special order the car and wait. About 2 months from order to PCD delivery, although that can vary.

In reference to the equalizer, there must be some way to prevent it from running. Friday, my delivery specialist and I first set up Bluetooth phone then Bluetooth audio. Then, I set up Sirius, then I connected my iPhone to the car via Apple's standard USB cable. I was then presented with an error message, which I really didn't read. Something in this process must have prevented the equalizer from being available. It was NOT in the tone menu delivery Friday nor Saturday. Today, I went out without my phone, no USB cable, and the EQ was there! Strange, but it is a computer.

So, the EQ part of my comments appears to be resolved (and the audio quality of a good FM station was great - looking forward to listening to a high quality CD).

In reference to the honeymoon period, this is my 8th BMW/Mini, so I don't think I could become blinded by love. I do, however, love the car. Just cataloging notable details.

Vibration: I haven't decided if I want to spend 2 days or more getting the balance fixed. I'm most likely going to get go-flat tires anyway. I guess I should.

Windshield: I really am hoping someone chimes in here. I can't believe it supposed to be that way, although one of the guys PMd me that his F10 didn't have a rubber gasket either.

HUD: looking forward to trying to code the car to add at least blinkers. Will have to study the coding forum.

Small world. I drove to Asheville from Atlanta thursday night. Then from Asheville to Gatlinburg on Friday via I40. Didn't realize there will be that many people in Gatlinburg. Then I went to the Tail of the Dragon, wow, that was an amazing route!

My 550I felt a lot better in the twistys than I thought it would.

Forgot to mention, no DOT. there is, however, a small button directly under the radio volume knob, which doesn't seem to do anything.

Turn signals can be coded in to the HUD. I had it done and it works great.

Well that explains a lot!

The "gasketless" windshield intall is also used for the rear glass.

It didn't look bad on my F10 and my thought was this is one less piece of problematic rubber or plastic trim to weather. Time will tell how it ages.

Update: brought to dealer Saturday, have service appt tomorrow. He politely interrupted me while I was detailing the vibration at 65 mph. "yes, we have that issue with a few of our f10 5 series. It's not a minor deal, will take us at least a day to take all the tires off the rims, rebalance and adjust everything... We sometimes have to replace the rims"
So, it's nice that they're not denying my issue, nor the trend of similar issues (ps no pull to right).

2nd issue: they want to give me Zurich shield, for free. I searched and found a posting about this from last year, TJPark and a few others were against it at the time. Any updated opinions?

One more update, then I guess I will let this thread die. They ended up replacing either 2 or 3 of my tires, speed balancing the others, and claim the vibration is gone. It's not - although it is much better than before.

I consider my time to be valuable. I was considering, even before I took delivery, of replacing my stock RFTs (Dunlap SportMax, btw) with PSS or equivalent. Any thoughts on likelihood that will rid me of my vibration (I don't pull to the right)? Am i letting the dealer off too easy if i just take the car elsewhere for the new tires? It's difficult to enjoy a new car if it 1)spends lots of time in service 2) vibrates notable between 60-70 mph.

Sounds like yours has the same issue mine had. Question - since you live in Memphis - have you tried to go across the bridge to AR to see if there is still vibration on their interstate pavement? Was it vibrating in The Carolinas when you picked up the car or did you first notice it on I40?

The reason I am asking is that the dealer had implied to me that it could be the interstate roads in TN that unsettle something in the current F10s suspension at those speeds. Is it every single road?

Of course that sounded a bit weird to me - but even if that was the case we cannot move. At the end, I personally didn't care for other qualities of this car too so I had to part with it instead of wasting time dealing with it.

This can also be coded to a new ring. There is a post about it somewhere.

I'm sorry, I thought I replied to this several days ago.

The concept that it is TN highways is laughable. Yes, I noticed the vibration as soon as I settled in to I40 2 miles from the PCD. S. Carolina, N. Carolina, eastern TN, central TN, western TN - all the same, although it is/was less notable when going downhill or accelerating. service dept at Roadshow BMW unequivocally agreed there was a problem. I'm driving to Greenville MS this weekend, so I will prove it again.

It definitely is. It is just the only thing I was told and didn't try and now with my CLS on the hardest suspension setting I do feel all the irregularities of the interstate - especially I-40 (in comfort airmatic setting though it is like gliding and pretty much everything is tuned out). Let us know how it goes!

I was in the same boat as you! I had a 2011 BMW 535i xdrive with vibration felt in the seats on highway at 70-80 mph and after countless balancing, replacing defective rims, and 8-12 new tires I still had vibration which was minmized but very annoying. A bad batch of 5 series were made. I am glad i no longer have this car anymore.
