What a bunch of nonsense. I drove with that shifter for 3 1/2 years and never had an issue with it. It does what you ask it to do, everytime. What more can you ask of a shifter?
Due to being "different" it might not be optimal in a rental but how often do you see these cars as rentals?

I nver needed it but getting it into neutral when there is no power could be a valid concern I guess. I think it's a cumbersome procedure.

Eh no...busted! I'm glad I did now though, that's funny and furthermore I listened to Highveld almost every day driving to work during my expat years in Africa ( in a BMW of course ). Brings back good memories.

Does it really do what is needed?

Why can't I shift into N without starting the engine??? On a few occasions I needed that inside my garage to no avail. Some of those "safety" features are stupid and driving me nuts (do they think we're complete morons out there these days?). Or like when you can't crawl forward with your door open and no seatbelt (say I want to make sure I parked correctly in a spot and crack the door to see and need to move forward a few inches....). I got more frustrations with that "safety" crap but don't want to hijack the thread so I listed only those related to the electronic shifter which is cool otherwise.

I did. I know it was to be funny and stupid, but I've brought up two concerns which are real and related to the shifter.

If you do a search there is a real thread for that.

Back on the shifter, I did think it was a little weird at first, but after the initial learning curve, all other shifters feel archaic and outdated. BMW did it right, IMO.

I agree. I like it a lot. My dad who has never owned a BMW likes it a lot too. He has no problems and he is 70. So I don't think that the unusual design is an issue for anyone with normal capabilities. Even an elderly man can figure it out quickly.

I will admit the shifter was a little intimidating when first got my car, but I really like it a lot as well. I can see where someone getting into a car for the first time without instruction would be a little confused. This humorous video may not be far from the truth with some people.

There is one thing that I have had difficulty overcoming with the shifter, though. I generally drive in DS mode (shifter to the left) and every time I go to put the car in reverse, it will not go until I move the shifter to the right. This leaves you in a state of limbo and embarrassment until you realize what just happened. I am aware of the need to move the shifter before reversing, but it just catches me every time.

Really! I'm glad to learn that. However, I do have concerns with the young whippersnappers who have just bought their first BMW.
