Car cuts out

Lately sometimes when the car has been idling it's like it's kind of like misses something and drops its revs to nearly cut out but will then go back up to nearly 1000 revs before calming back down. It has cut out a few times whilst idling plus yesterday when I was driving at around 10mph it cut out. At first I thought it was the coil packs but now I'm thinking it's the fuel injectors. Apart from everything she runs smooth and most of the time idles perfectly. I have noticed that in reverse she is mostly jumpy.
Has anyone had similar problems before I take it into BMW so I can tell what's the problem. I'm sure it's the injectors or something to do with the fuel system.

I had similar problems. When I would stop at a red light my car would idle below 500 an just stall out. I would sit there like 4-5 mins or so trying to crank it back but to no avail. After about 10 mins or so BOOM it would start back up. It use to do it every now an then. Then it cut of 3 times in a row on me. I asked a few members on the board an they told me it could my fuel pump or integrated supply module. So I bought those. Then another member called me an told me he just went through the same thing an it was the SBSR module so I bought that also. After changing the SBSR module No more problems. I also went ahead an changed the fuel pump an Integrated supply module as well. I know you have a 760 so we might not have the same problem Good Luck though.

the OP has a 760

i am pretty sure u have a problem with your high pressure fuel pumps

a 760 has 2 of them, and they cost about $3,000 a POP!

what year is your 760, do u have a warranty?

Does this happen when the car is in neutral? The fact that it is especially jumpy in reverse is the reason I ask. Next time it is idling bad put it in neutral (if it does not happen in neutral) and see if the car settles down.

If it only happens when the car is in drive then most likely it's your torque converter. The clutch om your torque converter is probably getting stuck and not allowing it to slip when the car is idling or coming to a stop from high speed.

Thanks for the advice Rookie I will try that.

DFEL750I the car idles ok when it's in drive it sits at around 600 - 700 revs at first when I put it in neutral it's ok for a few seconds then then revs drop like its going to cut out and it then bounces back up to nearly 1000 revs before cooling back down to it's usual idle. But sometimes it will not recover from the drop and totally cut out. That's why I totally believe its something to do with the fuel system. The reversing is jumpy (maybe because i am reversing at crawling speed) but I've learn from experience (with my previous 745i) to reverse slow because the parking sensors don't react quick enough. My 760 is a 2004 and I don't have a warranty.

I just recently had the same symptoms you described, and they get worse over time. It was the high pressure fuel pump in bank 1 (passenger) side, just as 7eleven said. $2600 for part $400 for labor @ my indy. She runs great now.

Another symptom is poor gas mileage. After replacing hpfp I'm up to 18 mpg from 9 mpg

Does it show up in the diagnostics when BMW plug into the car?

Or will I have to point them in the right direction?

I don't think there is a code for hpfp, 2 dealers had a look at my car & couldn't figure out the problem.

Before you pull the trigger on the dreaded $3,000 HPFP, attempt the following two long shot but cheap possible repairs;

1) Replace the Integrated Power Supply Module. $120 part and easy DIY. See link below;

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=526422

2) Replace the fuel filter/ with pressure regulator. You can purchase a mann/ mahle brand off eBay for like $70 which is exact same as BMW OEM. Again, easy DIY. See link below;

Keep us posted.

I've been onto BMW to order the Integrated power supply module and they have no idea what it is

Instead they have a Control unit power module for $455.66

Does anyone have a part number for the IPSM? I can give it to BMW and get the correct part. The other parts have been ordered in for Friday $118.46

does it cut off if you floor it from light to light? if you can have an INDY shop pull a quick test report ..

there should be a fault stored somewhere lol .. with the codes it will point us in the right direction ..

if your only getting lean codes

could be vacuum leaks pcv or fuel pressure thats causing this ..

if your getting vtc control bank 1 bank 2 we got other problems .. i have seen a v12 that needed the hpfp BUT he had hessitation when he was flooring

it aswell not much at idle

No it doesn't cut off when I floor it from light to light. It only sometimes and it is sometimes cuts out when I'm doing lower than 20-16kph and that's not giving it any gas just coasting along.

There is something I have also noticed recently when I use the 97octane petrol it happens more the cutting out at idle and at low speed than the 95octane but my car gets more miles on the 97octane.

I'm going to and narrow down the fault step by step. It's not a full major problem yet it's something I've noticed and want to address before it becomes major. The advice everyone has given is great and I'm going to do the DIY stuff and see if that makes a difference (it's only the Integrated power supply module I'm having problems getting from BMW). The vacuum problem also makes sense because my friend had a similar fault on his car which wasn't a BMW and soon as they replaced something to do with the air thing his revs were stable.

I just need to find the serial number for the Integrate power supply module and away I go.

I will get a fault code reading and post it to see if anyone can make sense of it.

Here's the joke I called BMW parts and gave them the part number at first they said it just came up as a module then I asked him to look again and confirm my part. He said yes it's in the catalogue under "Integrated supply module" but they couldn't find it the day before. I have to wait till next week Monday before they get it in stock $124.61

Ok I'll find out how much it is to ship it shouldn't be more than $30 I think. Can you get hold of a SBSR Module also?
