The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki |

Hi everyone
I upgraded from a 99 330i to 99 540i last month the bimmer has 117 mi, and i noticed 4 days ago some times when I ease on the gas the car sounds like the hit the gas for few seconds and comes back to normal afterward. And the service light came on toowith codes P1158 and P1160 , so I cleaned the AMF sensor and I found out that the coupler of the AMF was torn so need to be replaced, I bought the bimmer with spectre intake system never saw b4, Now the drive but dies at full stop since I cleaned the AMF system. Would the AMF be the matter at this point, I will changed the high flow air filter and the torn coupler pipe to see if the bimmer stops dying at full stop Is anyone familiar with these 2 codes P1158 and P1160 on e39 540i's, Any advice is appreciated |

Those codes are for fuel trim.
Not exactly sure of what you were trying to convey to us, however if the air boot between the MAF and the engine is torn you need to replace that part first. If it's torn before the MAF that wouldn't cause the engine to stall. If the tear is before the MAF unplug the MAF connector and see if it runs. If it does your MAF is bad. You'll get a CEL for the MAF being unplugged, which you can ignore.

Thanks Jimlev for your quick response. As you asked the crack is b4 the AMF, this morning I unplugged the AMF connector and start the car it starts and drive without any issue but once u connect back the plug the engine idle loud and goes off. So as you said this is sign of a bad AMF sensor.
Could u give me some explanation about the 2 faulty codes P1158 ( fuel trim additive bank 1 low) and P1160 ( fuel trim additive bank 2 low), if you know about them. Can they be connected to a bad AMF sensor or something else. I really appreciated it. |

Both those codes indicate that the DME detects a rich condition, and is trying to lean it out. It has gotten to the max lean condition, and cannot further lean out the mixture; that's why the code is thrown.
If the engine runs fine w/o the MAF (AMF?), I suspect this is the cause. When the MAF is disconnected, the DME reverts to a default fuel map.

I really appreciate that, I will change the AMF crossing my fingers the issue will be solved and the service engine soon light will go away so I can do the emission.
Thanks again, |

Curious as to why OP keeps referring to it as a AMF despite corrections for MAF. (Mass Air Flow sensor).

Yeah you are right it is AMF sensor, instead of AMF

Didn't AMF make bowling balls and also once own Harley Davidson?

Yea but they had to sell harley davidson because their bowling balls started to convert gasoline directly into obnoxious noise without any of the side affects of horsepower.

It's a Mass Air Flow meter. It is calibrated to measure the mass of the air entering the engine. Note that, if you actually measure the mass of the air, temperature and humidity are accounted for in the measurement.
AMF = Air Mass Flow?

Air mass meter = mass air flow sensor
BMW calls it the air mass meter. So it should be AMM or MAF. |

I put a new OEM bosch MAF sensor in it but the problem was not only the MAF also Vacuum valve in the back if the engine connected the Crank case went cover was leaking too, look for all the vacuum leak b4 changing anything, front all the hose leading to the throttle body and intake manifold also the back of the engine make sure all the hoses are well connected, u can also do the vacuum leak check by leaving the engine on while spraying carburetor clearing around the hoses, front and back intake manifold area, if the engine idles up while spraying on an area there is leak there
Hope that helps |
