brand new 550 2000 miles low oil

So I have a brand new 550 I with only 2000 miles on it and I am already getting a low oil light. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal for these cars? I had a turbo saab that ate oil but not until it had after 500000 miles on it. Whats up with this? On the way home from work the warning came on twice. Turned the car off when i got him drove it to the store and the warning didn't come on. Now this morning the warning is back on.

Its normal for this engine to burn a little oil during the first 10,000 miles. Take it to your dealer for a top off.

I just crossed 4K miles with my 2012 550i last weekend and it asked for another quart. I had just driven about 150 miles. Luckily I was 5 miles from BMW of Atlantic City. I pulled in and asked them to top me off.

It seems like it is pretty typical, or at least I had the same behavior with my 2008 535xi. About every couple thousand miles if I were on a long trip over an hour it would ask for a quart. Never while I was local driving, only on extended trips.

Does this oil behavior happen with anyone else?

We have had several threads/polls on the topic. I believe the overall answer is it varies from every 2k to never.

The V8's and M cars appear to have a much sloppier engine.

I have owned several BMW's and never had this issue with the 6 cyilinder engines unless it was an M.

The V8's BMW's I have owned guzzled oil the first 10k miles and then tapered off to no need to add oil at all between oil changes.

My brand-new 550 needed its first extra quart at approximately 5500 miles. My last 550 which was am E60 needed a quart about every 5 to 6000 miles as well.

Given my awareness of the issue I always monitor my oil level on the Idrive. When I am one notch above the minimum level, I buy a quart but I do not add it until I'm at minimum level so I don't overfill

Excellent advice.

I just got the low oil level warning this weekend at 8,000 miles. If it's so typical for BMW engines, their 550 V8's, to burn a quart or two during the first 10,000 miles, why don't they have a scheduled maintenance at about 5,000 instead of 15,000?

It could be that it's cheaper to add a quart than do an oil change. IIRC, this is only happening before the first oil chang. I added a quart at 11k, and my current oil is also at 11k right now and I'm down only a quarter quart. Anyone out there have a higher mileage oil add issue?

I'm sure you're right. I was just being facetious.

It would be nice to add a little snippet in the owners manual stating this is normal during the first x miles of ownership. I think the owners manual states that oil consumption is dependent on driving style.

1700 miles and nothing yet....absolutely zero soot on the exhaust.

not bad compared to my 09 997.2 DFI Carrera.....Porsche Ok with 1 qt. per 600 miles! that car drank oil for no reason (at least i could see).
