525i wont start......
I'm new to the world of BMW's (newer ones,anyway)....... I have a 1995 525i with the EWS system in it........ Someone worked on it before me, and replaced the ignition lock cylinder housing. Now the car won't start, and I noticed that the antenna ring that goes around the lock cylinder has been kinda rigged together (copper wires for the ring are just twisted together to the green wires of the connector, then plugged into the little black box mounted to the steering column)........ I was wondering if replacing just the antenna portion might cure the problem, or should i just take it to a shop and let them fix it???? I'm pretty good with electrical (I own a Ford Ranger with a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe motor swap done by me), this is kinda something new to me...... BTW, the key is the one that came with the car originally, as well as the lock cylinder. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

I'm a little confused though. I was thinking that the chip alone would bypass the EWS so you would not need to do any of the wiring modification. Did you by any chance try to crank the car after only replacing the chip? I would love to know if it would have cranked without having to do the wiring modifications. The only thing you did differently than the EWS write up I did was to add a chip rather than swap to a red label DME. If you don't mind me asking, how much did the chip cost on Ebay? Used red label DME's go for around $50-$75 in my area. It seems that these cars are reaching an age where the DME or the EWS systems are starting to fail somewhat regularly. Anyway, glad you got it running again.

In regards to the above, I completely understand that just doing the wiring modification will not by pass the EWS and allow the car to start. My question was, in the OP's situation, would his car start with ONLY the chip change. He noted that he did the wiring modification as well as putting the chip in. I was of the understanding that the chip by itself should bypass the EWS and no wiring modifications would be needed. Any thoughts on that?

In my case, just the chip alone would not allow the car to start, I'm guessing that the starting circuit in the EWS module was bad, so I removed the module completely, and did the wiring modification afterwards...... Hope this helps!!!!
