HID kit install

Done Hid installs many times without any issues
but never on a e36

Opened my bonnet and had a look at the current system and i seem to have an issue

The wiring to the headlight bulb is only 1 wire?
There is a 2nd wire that goes and attaches to the headlight somewhere (but not the actual bulb)

So when it comes to powering my HID kit
where should positive and negative go?
