110,000 on my 2002 4.4i, sport premium pkg. I've owned it for five years and am enjoying it more every day. Parts replaced: front cv axles, radiator expansion tank, one window regulator. If you're mechanically inclined at all, most issues can be DIY. I do my own brakes, spark plugs at 100k, belts, battery, oil changes, etc. Total maintenance cost over the last five years for me has been around $1,5000.

Don't feel bad. I leased a brand-new X5 for $620/month. Over a 24 month period, I will have paid $14,880... and I don't own it!

It feels painful, but you are winning this game.

Maybe on paper you are right Mike

Maybe on paper you are right Mike... but the time, and multiple trips to the dealer, on the phone, cancelled plans, etc., etc. cost far far more emotionally then the cumulative financial cost on paper.

There is definately something to be said for the cost of "peace". I may not have any car note... but I feel like I'm $20k in the hole emotionally. Definatley time to get a more current model (2006-08?). If not... the new Ford Explorer is looking reall good right about now lol!

I'm trying to make you feel good.

I'm in the camp that gladly pays $600+/month to ensure my car is "reliable" and under warranty at all times. It's peace of mind for me. But, I do have a couple old cars that nickel and dime me to death... so I feel your pain.

I am interested to do DIY. What skills/service manual/tools do you suggest?

I just got our best friend's 2002 X5 with only 11k miles on it. I need to do a smog check first before the title can transfer. I am reading the forum from the top page till now. I saw you have the same car as mine. I am learning while I am typing here.

Thanks,

Maildrop

how do you find a 9 year old car with only only 11,000 miles on it ??? i think half the problems reported on x5 forums is due to lack of use

get out and drive that sucker

oh and as far as costs go, you should try boats, including depreciation my 32 footer as lost me $50,000 in two years, makes the X5 look cheap

hehe, as said you have to pay to play

How many miles of your X5

Considering friends have had a mansion at B.H. as a vacation home, money is not an issue. :-)

2002 4.4i with 164,000 miles. Need some front CV boots. (those thing don't last 100k) I have a very slow leak in the rear self leveling suspension. It all goes down together so i know its not any of the air springs. (replacing those soon). Everything else is good, hoping to hit 300k maybe.

Arrow My Black Beast..

02. - 4.6is with 125k, still running strong, i think there it is going to need some trans work soon and steering angle sensor is out as well. Apart from that its a beast for sure with DINAN upgrades (software & CAI). Major work is usual CV Boot, Battery, alternator, Brakes ( i have after market rotors and pads) which last longer than OEM and less dust. Love it..

just surpassed 180,000 on our trip home from the CA. Desert. The transmission is starting to act-up...the torque converter struggles finding 4th gear under light accelleration/load. I'll try a fluid/filter replacement in the next week or so...hope it fixes it

otherwise, I had the alternator replaced @ 80k, battery at the same time, valley pan and valve cover gaskets at 100k...routine oil services.

it's been a great car, it does go through tires abnormally though

interior/exterior look like new

Are you or did you have air suspension issues? Not intended to jinx, just wanting to know what time to start expecting as I am at 164k.

My wife sold her E53 at 100K, now she has a 2009 E70 with over 60,000. That's averaging over 20,000 a year. That's not a lot (esp by Texas standards), but it is above average for X5 owners.

- When you do the fluid/filter replacement on the X5, would love to know if that would fix the slipping, as I am seeing similar symptoms on my X5. THX!

I'm going to try and get it done next week...I'll let all know the outcome

The only issue I had with the air suspension turned-out to be one of the fuses in the rear cargo area...no problems before/since
