Great car.

Hi , my 2005 4.4 X5 has done 194,000 ks . I have had it for a year now and other than auto filter and oil change and motor oil and brake fluid changes, the only thing I had to do was the engine oil pressure switch started to leak ($25) I do all my own work( I am a mechanic) and just love this car , it is the best car I have owned in my life and I have been driving since 1960 !!! When I get a bit more spondoolies I will buy a latter model one but a petrol not the troublesome Diesel model.

How many miles on your X5 E53 ?

Hi my 05 4.4 has done 194,000 kilometres and runs like new. The only non service item I have had to replace is the oil pressure switch. Not hard to do myself , cost $25nz. Used 1 litre oil between changes. Had new battery (Bosch) 800cca, brake pads . Cant understand all the trouble people have with window winders, door handles , I believe they break the door handles by holding your hand the wrong way, holding down on top instead of lifting from underneath, train your family? I get 12.4 L/100k ( 22.6mpg) fuel usage which is dam good for a 4.4 V8 with this much grunt!!! A mighty car, love driving it. It pays to be more of an enthusiast rather than just treating it as a mode of transport, I have an old 94 2.8 D turbo Pajero that I use for all my rough work.

Great post. I have been reading a lot of posts as well thinking the same thing. I've had a 2003 x5 4.4 for 3 years. It's got 163km (101m) and other than reg service (brakes, tires, oil and air filters) it has been a great ride. I just changed the precat o2 sensors as preventative but all this reading has me nervous to begin a boatload of other preventative items like belts, hoses, cvv, maf sensor, valve cover gasket, etc.
Thoughts?

2003 X5 3.0 with 129,325 miles. It had the same issues everybody had with this model from window regulator having to be replaced to a new transmission. The transmission was replaced only about 2 years with the car. Besides all the problems earlier with the car, its riding smooth and new. Hopefully I'll reach the 200k mile mark!!!!!

Reliability of E53 X5

We have serviced many E53 X5 with over 100,000 miles on the odometer. The overall vehicle is quite reliable. A common issue we see with this vehicle is a failure of the Crank Case vent valve along with the accompanying hoses connecting it to the engine. Especially during the winter months, this component can fail unexpectedly and leave the vehicle incapacitated. Following regular inspection of these parts, along with checking for any potential leaks from the drive-train should give this vehicle a reliable lifespan beyond 100,000 miles.

I have a 2001 Bmw x5 with 225k miles on it. Engine runs perfect, had normal issues for Bmw, but with proper maintenance and correct diagnose you can drive this thing for a long period of time.

I just bought a 2005 X5 with 116,000 miles on it. What can anyone recommend in terms of what I should do for its initial service as I show no service records on it. Or at least any recent records.
