Smog check

My 540i failed smog check at 15 mph but passed at 25 mph.
Is there something that can be replaced or adjusted or repaired other than replacing the cats to pass???

The previous owner of my car had issues with the smog check and replacing the evaporative emission control valve did solve that. I don't know to much about it but I saw the service records.

What is the model year of the car? How many miles? Do the cats rattle when struck with a rubber mallet?

If you have a '97-'98, you can do Magnaflow cats. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of the dealer. You're probably close to needing new cats.

I was able to get mine to squeak past be replacing the pre-cat O2 sensors. Bosch only! Got them at AutoZone. It had failed the 15 MPH test.

Thanks for the input. It's 97' 540i 200k. I'll do the cat check, I was getting a low voltage read on pre O2 sensor in bank 2 a while back and never came back.

1st check it failed at 15rpm. It was over the allowed NO max of 409 measured 1407. Passed at 25rpm NO max 695 squeezed by at 694 measured.

After replacing the pre cat O2 sensors the 15rpm NO measured 53 and at 25rpm measured 28. Huge difference. Hope this helps anyone having smog check problems.

I purchased the replacement O2 sensors at autozone. BOSCH 13559
