X1 28 versus 328

Has anyone driven the X1 4 cyl turbo and the new 328 sedan back to back?

I test drove many cars and suvs and they all seem either too tall or too big. The 528, A6, X3, GLX, EX, Allroad, and Q5 didn't have that great handling feel that the 2012 328 sedan had.

My wife and I will be doing our first Europe trip in Sept or Oct this year and want to do a European Delivery of either the X1 or 328ix. The X1 will be available for ED starting in late Sept so we won't be able to test drive one in the US before making the choice.

I want a bit more storage than the 328 has but it is not a deal breaker.

Specifically, does the X1 have handling closer to the X3 or is it more similar to the 328. What are your general opinions as to the sportiness of these 2 vehicles, especially the X1 28.

Thanks.

Drove the X3, X1, 328i xDrive (E90) back-to-back during an event and my impressions through the pylons where almost identical for the X1 and 328 (no surprise since platform is the same), with the sedan having a slight advantage due to lower centre of gravity.

2012 X1s have a slightly heavy steering though, but not sure about the LCI 2013 models. You'll be pleased to know that X1s use the old hydraulic power steering we've all grown to love

Thank you for your reply.

How did you feel about the driving height of the X1? The X3 height seemed too tall for me.

I love that the 2013 X1 may have the hydraulic steering.

It seems that you can not get the heads up display, rear heated seats, nor the knee airbags in the USA X1 but the hydraulic steering in the X1 is a real plus.

The 328 I test drove was the most fun to drive. Did you get the same feeling in the X1?

Thank you.

Drove the 328 and Audi A4 at a USA Team event this week. I really liked the A4 and led me to think about the A3 as a replacement for my 05 X3 since the X1 doesn't offer a diesel (or Manual Transmission). The A4 also is limited to AT for the Quattro version but it can be had with a Diesel.

I will be checking the A3 later for a better comparison but the A4 test drive has me looking.

Cheers

For what it's worth the Quattro on the A3 is not the same great haldex system that is on the other Audis (A4 etc.). They got cheap but are still using the "quattro" name hoping people do not notice.

We're coming down to X1 v. 328i. I have a feeling lease rates will be better for the 328i than the X3, thus the 328i will probably win as I'll be paying less to get manual (which I love).

The advantages of the X1 appear to be:
1. More trunk/expandable space than the 328i
2. Better color choices (lots more choices than the 328i)
3. Real steering rack
4. Shorter than the 328i
5. Less ubiquitous than the swing-a-dead-cat-hit-five-3-series
6. Probably a tad easier for car seats
7. Comfort access (won't get premium on the 3 series as it offers no advantages beyond the comfort access)

328i Benefits (for me):
1. Better handling
2. Manual
3. Cheaper lease
4. Better efficiency
5. More toys (back up camera seems nice but not with navi, which must be ordered to get the camera on the X1)
6. Grey leather
7. Sun shades (not on the X1)
8. No moonroof
9. Faster

Why not wait for a F31?

Current lease ends in December. Will probably buy before then (like order in July) as I'm anxious to dump my current car.

I found the X1's height acceptable compromise after driving them back-to-back
I found the X3 too high as well to enjoy driving around corners.

I drove the F30 328i a few months ago and I agree with your comment... it's most fun! the 335i is a different story

The 2nd generation X1 (2015) will be based on the F30 platform. Head-up display and other advanced electronics will be available then, together with electric power steering

driving dynamics being almost equal, X1 is for practicality and value for money. 328i is for fun, great looks, advanced electronics and advanced suspension settings

I didn't realize that the X1 will be redesigned in 2015. That would be another factor to purchase the 328ix since it will a current design for 5-6 more years.

Does anyone know what date the 328ix and the X1 will be available for European Delivery this year? I phoned BMW USA last month and they said on the 10th and 24th of Sept respectively. I called them yesterday and they said they had no information but to check with my local dealer.

The X1 seems like a real bargain. I estimated that the X1 is around $4000 less than a comparably equipped 328ix. An exact apples to apples comparison of price is difficult since the 328 offers several things that are unavailable on the X1.

When I was there for the Drive for USA event, the dealer said they thought it would be available in July at their site.

Cheers
