smg gearbox trouble compression spring maybe?

hi there,

I recently bought a 2003 E46 M3 and have some trouble with the SMG gearbox. When changing gear from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th when giving it the beans and in setting 4/5/6 it often takes ages, flashing the gear number on the dash while it waits for revs to drop and finally it returns power to me. 4th to 5th and 1st to 2nd change blisteringly fast with no trouble. From what I've read online i'm guessing I need to change a compression spring. I'm looking to do this myself with help rather than have BMW do it. I was looking for any advice or guide and photos etc, also does it need to be reconfigured electronically if the spring and/or gearbox are removed? Can the spring be accessed by going through the body inside the car rather than lowering everything off etc? surely a surgical bit of work through the passenger floor could access the point.

cheers

John O
