Road Trip!

Finally I get to take my D on a road trip with the Missus.

Taking a leisurely drive down to Key West for Saturday Night. It is about a 3 hour drive one way but you really have to follow the speed limits.

I should see some impressive MPG.

Flyingman,
ENJOY!
I'm doing a road trip too in 2 weeks - Palm Beach to Santa Fe - 2k miles each way. Straight thru mostly interstates on the way out I75, I10, I49, I20 through Dallas and then up to I40. Just over three days.
I got the Sat Radio installed as well as the Garmin ECO Route connected through my Samsung Galaxy II for infotainment. I don't expect great mileage as once I get west of Dallas, where speed limits are suggestions, I expect to be able to open the D up!

2 months in Santa Fe in the high desert summer HOT & DRY - triple digit temperature & single digit humidity readings.

On our trip back east in September, I'm planning some "scenic" diversions along the way. Since I'm a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, Bartlesville OK, St Louis,The Bourbon Trail KY, Tale of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway in TN & NC for some real driving entertainment.

D
Over the past couple of months I have done a few long trips in Texas. It seems that ever since the limits were raised to at least 75 that people have given up on paying attention to limits. Most of these trips I would find myself cruising with traffic at 95 and everyone packs up like it is 55 and they want around each other. To give an idea of this my average speed from Fairfield to my driveway was around 87mph and not like the Interstate gets off anywhere near my home and I also was not being the fastest car at all.

I just ran back and forth to Kerrville on I-10, same deal. I came back through Austin on 71 and groups of cars were clustered together right at 100.

Not far west of Kerrville, you get this:

I almost took a drive out there to see for myself, but I couldn't get away.

Is that a recent picture? Only reason I ask is the spots of I45 and I10 I have been on no longer have night time specific speed limits.

Just got back, fun trip down to Key West.

It is really slow going though. Much of it is just two lanes, then there was a draw bridge open, lost about 1/2 an hour in heavy traffic. About 150 miles one way and took almost 5 hours!

My average MPG as per OBC was right about 33.1mpg. I suspect actual is closer to 34mpg.

Had A/C blasting the whole way, temps were in the 90's.

Realized I had driven over 300 miles on a 1/2 a tank.

On Friday I leave for a two week road trip from central PA to the upper peninsula of Michigan. Should be about 2000 miles round trip.

Not sure, I just grabbed the pic off of a chron.com article I was reading that was whining about raising the the limits. On another note, that new tollway around Austin might get an 85 MPH limit soon.

1,100 miles in two weeks on the X5, not as much as I did with the 335d, 1,700 in 5 days! They are great on road trips.

My day to day driving nets over 1100 miles every two weeks. I think I need a teleporter.

Yep. I love Key West and used to go down all the time. The problem is it takes so long to get down and back with the traffic.

You are close to me. I do about 600 a week in commuting alone. I sometimes do a 1000 a week total driving.

I picked up my 535 thanksgiving weekend and did not drive it for 4 weeks between now and then and it just rolled over 17k miles in 7 months of ownership. It also does not get driven on the weekends. Believe me when I say I know how you feel.

Exactly whose Missus are you planning to take? But seriously, you should get excellent mileage given that there are no hills.I'm on a road trip in my Bluetec right now in the Midwest...just got 38.1mpg at 70mph over a 425 mile stretch.....several big slowdowns included. Plus we had the A/C blasting...101 degrees for a few hours! But with no slowdowns you should do much better.

Actually it was in the 33-34mpg range. Average speed would have been in the 40-45mph range given the traffic. A bit below optimum speed for the D. Speed limit is generally 55mph with an ocassional 60mph stretch but with lots of 45 and 35 through the towns.

Is that a guess on the average speed or did you use the computer to give you the average speed for the trip?

Actually you're right.I've done Key West once...30 years ago...and forgot that it's not the same as I-75.IIRC there wasn't much traffic on my trip but that may well not be the norm.Kinda like being able to breeze through Manhattan at 6AM on a Sunday...most of the time it doesn't work that way!

I remember getting a ticket for driving over 50 in a 35 zone during a vacation trip in 2003. The cop was nice, the ticket was for $35

I went there last year but didn't seem to see too many cops.

Last weekend trip to Sacramento gave me over 300 miles on half tank of gas. Was showing off to coworkers.

That's a guess Snipe. I didn't look at my Avg speed. But it took me about 5 hours to drive some 160 miles, so maybe it was close to 30-35mph. The Overseas Highway can get really backed up on weekends and holidays, and forget about trying to get out when a Hurricane Evacuation is called. Most folks just stay and ride it out!

Just completed my true road trip with my D and the family. I drove to Ft. Lauderdale from NJ but stopped in Savannah GA overnight(I have a 4 year old in a car seat). After few days at the beach we went to Disney for four days.

Yesterday I drove from Orlando to NJ in 17 hrs with stops. Its amazing to stop for fuel only once in Florence, S. Carolina and make it to NJ for next fill up. Computer showed 629 miles to empty right after the last fuel stop which is very high because I usually see 550-580 range.

I replaced the tires about a month ago and new Michelin non-RFT PS2s are very noisy compared to old RFT BS RE050As I had for 3 years.

Okay, my girl friend, my daughter, and i are getting in on the fun. Road trip is short though. Going up to DFW to see family and go to Six Flags. Not looking forward to the I-45 north conroe bottle neck as we are leaving in the beginning of rush hour.
