Cooled ventilated seats.....any better in 2011-2013?

Searched the forums and read some people seem to say they don't do much in the threads I read from 2010 and 2011. I'm in Miami so the heat and humidity cause instant sweating. Opinions? How about the stock perforated seats? Looking to get x5 5.0 in 4 months when my ML350 lease ends.

Im in Louisiana and use ventilated seats all the time. They aren't perfect, but they defiantly make a difference.
Unfortunately, my 2013 doesn't cool any better than my previous 2007...and its just as loud.

They work better with the A/C on. From what I read, the fans just suck the air from the cabin and blows it through the seat vent holes. It works better sometimes than others. I notice it cools much better when I have a sweaty back... because that's what sweat is supposed to do, I guess lol. Weird, sometimes I feel my back get chilled and other times I feel no difference.

I have an '11. It is probably the biggest disappointment I have with the car. As a matter of fact, it is the ONLY disappointment I have. The car is awesome otherwise....

Ditto here. I have the 2011 X5 and the ventilated seats are a disappointment to me as well. Not thrilled with size of the visors either ... but I didn't pay extra for that!

When I was test driving different makers and models of similar SUVs, I really liked Infiniti's ventilated seats .... it's was obviously chilled air coming through the seats. But when I test drove the BMW, the particular model I drove didn't have that feature, so I wasn't able to check it out on the BMW. But I ordered my X5 with the ventilated seats anyway, assuming it would be like the other makers' ventilated seats.

Most of the time, I can't really tell they are on, even at the highest setting. Had them checked out at the dealership, and they say they are working as they should.

If I had to order mine again, for the money involved, I'd go without the extra ventilation unless they've upgraded the ventilation to actual chilled air ... instead of just moving the cabin air.

I'm glad that I didn't spring for it, because I've heard so many bad reviews of BMW's system (it's some sort of water-bag/fan system I think), but it sucks for you guys that paid for the option. They need to fix this in the next iteration, especially for us here in the Southern regions!

Wouldnt it be nice to wire up a small axial impeller fan under the seat to boost the airflow? Whole lot easier that many mods, and is one of those "Whats the worst that can go wrong?" mods...under the seat, never see it.

Don't have ventilated seats on my X5, but a co-worker of mine who got his 2012 X5 back in May said that the ventilated seats were the biggest disappointment for him with his first BMW. The air flow is just too weak is how he described the problem... Of course he was comparing the seats to the ones he had in a previous car of his (a Volvo) which apparently had an air flow that was so strong it could make one levitate!

I have them and they are just not worth it. Before ordering, I drove a demo with them and just couldn't feel much of a difference compared to my 911 cooled seats. But, had to order them so I could get the multicontour seat package.

I have them in my 2009 Infiniti FX35 (they just suck air in from the cabin, so the A/C must be on for them to have any real affect, I leave them on full all the time). I test drove the X5 with them and wasn't too impressed so my MY13 being delivered in August I left them out. Seemed like a waste of money (Infiniti on the other hand doesn't charge you an arm and a leg, it was included in what is essentially the equivalent of the Convenience Pkg)

In my 2011 X5 I have the ventilated seats and agree they are not impressive as you cannot feel the air movement. However, on long drives across the hot summer desert one can definitely tell they are working as your clothes do not stick to you. So I would say they are more of a "passive" ventilation providing air flow rather than an "acitve" cooling like I had in my Infiniti which actually cooled the seat. BMW really should have a better cooling function for all of the money they cost. This is the only dissapointment I have found with the car in over 35,000 miles.

so is anyone ingenious enough to modify the seat fan? Like maybe just upgrade to a larger or more efficient fan? Anyone taken their seats apart?

Did not have to buy ventilated seats in my 2013 X5 3.5 to get the multicontour seats.

I think he meant on the 911 he had to order it to get multi contour.
