Serious buyer scared away from my car

So...I was all set to sell my car to a guy on Friday. But he backed out and bought a different 535i. Well today I found out he had talked to the previous owner, and the PO told him that the head gasket on my car was seeping....WTF? So I called the repair shop that inspected the car in April and they said there was no problems with the head gasket. Yes, the timing cover gasket is seeping and they said to monitor it, but no problems with the head gasket. So yeah, the PO scared away a serious buyer, and I'm more than a little pissed right now.

/end rant

Hate to say it, but you can't blame the prospective buyer from running after hearing that from the PO. How did the prospective buyer get the PO's information prior to purchase?

Did you tell him about the issues? You kind of messed up by not giving him run down of the leaks.

I referred him to call the shop, seeing as they know more about the car than I do. And since it was inspected in April, I'm pretty sure they gave him a run down of the inspection they did.

wtf if he sold it to you with those problems what gives him the right to say you're not being up front with people, is this guy a local? If so I'd confront him face to face

What a *********. Once the car is sold he has no idea what has happened with the car since and theirfor shouldnt stick his nose in where it clearly didnt belong. Good on you for giving him the shop to call about the inspection (if everything checked out) but i still dont see how he got the POs information.

He sounds like he is angry which I don't get but I will still have to agree with PO... I would probably do the same thing if I cared about the car I sold.

I hope you don't have 'no mechanical' issues or anything like that in your ad and then tell buyer who is interested that you don't really know and he needs to call the shop or whatever.

Either way, I would update my ad, adjust the price to take care of what needs to be done and move on there is no win/win because you are trying to sell it, they don't benefit from this.

Now that sucks Grav. I've had that done on a BF.C classified before.
I contacted the poster immediately and asked him for the reasoning behind it.

Usually people do it not to be clear. But to get the seller to drop the price.

Again sorry to hear this type of backsliding is going on.

Well, for $5500, it better have a gold brick in the trunk.

Bought a 1991 535i in WAY better condition and similar mods (war chip, suspension, wheels, etc...) for $2900 last year. Don't know why everyone thinks M30 cars are worth a million.

I am in no way siding with anyone here, just sayin.

The whole HG thing will be confirmed tomorrow or this week sometime. Gonna take the car into the BMW dealership and have them inspect it. That way 2 different shops will have inspected the car.

Grav 5,500 is a little high.
Bought mine on the cheap. But it needed body work.

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1745579

I toy with selling it now. Mainly because I need a larger car.
But honestly I can't tear myself away from it.

Mine is 5k or 4k without wheels.

But I've done a ton of crap to it with more to go.

So I guess in terms for bang for your buck... that's your competion.

IMVHO Unless your hard pressed for 4-5k. I'd put 3800 and watch it drive away.

For that's would I'd give you considering it's clean and I know the PO. (you )

Who me?!?

Nah I can give you a clear price.

I know grav and Mean from Bf.c so I have a good idea of what they've done. So my prices thrown at them will be bias.

But...

On average. unless you have a m5, m-sport, a swap, or a boosted e34, you shouldn't expect to get more than 4k.

Low miles is excellent please don't get me wrong with that.
But IMVVVHO it would be a hard sell if you sold a standard e34 with an auto for 5k+.
Bascially you'll be fishing.

Seems to me there is more than one side to this... I tried to buy this car before Gravik. My experience with the PO was that he was a serious flake. The car was for sale for a long time. I recall reading threads about how the coil overs install was screwed up, hence the fender damage. The PO advertised it with the WAR chip, so it was removed? I wouldn't trust that guy farther than I could throw him, I have list of other concerns with the guy and the deal that never happened but I think the point is made.

On the flip side, I think the car was overpriced even IF it was pristine, based on buying a similar car.

Now the PO claims the wagon traded to him by Gravik had several issues, that is where the claim of not being able to properly care for a car comes from. Who knows Not me for sure.

Now as a buyer I would be seriously concerned about buying a car like this from a guy who states that the shop that did the inspection knows more about the car than he does. So you own a car you know nothing about and you want to sell it for a premium?

Seems like a pretty cool car, I hope someday it falls into the hands of an enthusiast that will know all about it, and care for it properly.

I'm asking $4,850 as is. $4,000 with stock wheels. I definitely feel like with the stock wheels on I will be selling to a broader reach of people and not just young guns that want a sporty looking Bimmer.

The few things my car does need are just usual wear and tear stuff and the repair shop that examined the car said none of it is pressing and urgently needs to be replaced asap.

And yes, the wagon I traded him had a few issues, which I knew about. I would have fixed them if I could have afforded to. It's just that, being tight on money, I had fixed what needed to be fixed asap (fuel pump, radiator, etc). The couple other issues weren't seriously pressing. (front struts and brake pads)

I'm just saying the shop knows more about the mechanical shape than me because they've done a thorough inspection on the vehicle and the other shop had consistently seen the car for 15 years, so yeah, they would know more about it that me. And the owner before the guy I bought it from obviously took really good care of it (I'm the 4th owner. The 2nd owner had it regularly serviced) and I have service records dating back to 1995. And yeah, after having it listed at $5,500 I agree I overpriced it.

I hear you Grav. If you can get it do it.
For it would help the demand price go up. Will it go up? Give it 7 years.

In general, there are a few things which need to be equated in the sales of our cars.
Model, Condition and demand are primary.
There's not a high enough demand for the m20, m30(except the Alpina BTs), m50, m62 cars that would support a 4500- 5k+ price point.
It's just not there.

It forces you to rely on the model and condition.
Model's pretty easy. It's what your selling.

With condition people look at:
Location of the car
Overall body
Maintenance
Maintenance upgrades
Performance upgrades.

My thing is records. Records are a must.
My prior m30 car had all the records.
My current one was from a BF.C member(s) who were forth coming with all the issues.
I now have a 3 ring binder with receipts, product manuals, and warranty documentation from the past 2 years thats already 3 inches thick in paper.

Put all this together and my previous statement is spot on.

Unless you have a m5, m540/6, Alpina BT, ASC silo., auth. M5t, a swap, Boosted (boosted m20s unfortunately don't count unless they are e30s)or SC e34.

The likelyhood of commanding a price point higher than 4500-5k is about as good as me catching a 20lb salmon in the east river.

Which is why most e34s get parted out or sold at a loss.

So unless your in a rush to sell. For 4k-4800 you'll possibly be sitting on it for a while.
If so fix everything, upgrade what you can, and keep receipts.

or try craigslist catch that one person who wants to buy that e34 they remembered from childhood.

Eitherway I hope you get it sold and I hope you get what you want for it.
I'm in no way trying to downplay your car or what you want for it.
However theses are the things your up against.
