Trans Program message & error code 46

I got the dreaded Trans Program error on my '94 530i automatic.

I had a BMW specialist and a transmission shop look at it and both recomended tranny replacement or rebuild. I went with the rebuild because the warrenty was better for only a little more money (and rebuild sounded better than another used tranny).

Bottom line, the tranny shop never got it fixed. They did the rebuild but it was still throwing codes and after 3 months they finally gave up and gave me a refund.

At one point, they took it to a 3rd party BMW specialist for a more complete diagnostic. The specialist said they diagnosed everything electrical outside the tranny and found nothing wrong, so the problem must be inside the tranny.

But their report says they found error code 46 - output speed sensor stored on the transmission computer module.

First of all, what does that code mean?

Is it possible the speed sensor itself is bad and causing all this trouble?

Or is that just mean something else is wrong and the output speed sensor is where it sensed the problem?

Any other tricks or tips & things I should look for?

One more thing:

Since getting the car back from the tranny shop, the dash display where it should show "ED" or "S4" etc no longer works.

if it were me, I wouldn't bother messing with a shop,

they couldn't fix it so they gave u a refund which is better than some shops (top dead center/redline performance spartanburg SC totaled a friends car and did not give him a refund or pay for the car)

I'd just get a trans off ebay, put the car on jackstands and replace it myself, pulling transmissions isn't hard its very straight forward plus you know its done right
