Not to leave the E46/E85 crowd left out, we just wrapped up development of the new SmartTop module for E46 Convertibles.

OMG. Having to wait forty seconds for your top to go up or down. Quelle horreur. How can anyone endure this torture?

There is appeal to this. I pretty much only drive the M3 with the top down. What's the point in driving with the top up? So I'm operating the top every time I drive the car. Having to sit and hold the button is annoying, as I'd rather be using that time to buckle up, close the garage, don my sunglasses, etc. And the ability to open/close the top remotely may be beneficial, especially if you have back-seat passengers, as the operation of the roof whacks them in the back of the head!

Of course, the appeal would have to be weighed to the cost and difficulty of installation. Which I haven't looked into yet.

Here's a video of the option setup menu, on the Z4, e46 is identical. Note there is no computer required for changes.



All options can either be programmed by laptop or via the radio controls.

I would be afraid of too much load on my battery. I never put the top up or down without the engine running. I don't put too many miles on my M3 and a car sitting for a few weeks may not have a full charge. I do like the plug in installation though. I would also not risk bending hardware just to put up the top while moving at any speed. I know product says you can, but not worth the risk to me. Just my .02

I was very interested until I saw the price. Too much, imo.
